Job Description
Salary: $50-$65/Hourly

This position provides strategic space planning support for NREL existing sites, facilities, and infrastructure to meet mission needs, working with organizational leaders and key partners to understand space requirements, anticipate constraints, and develop projections.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop, document, and review functional requirements with customers to facilitate space programming and develop space plans for high security and specialty space types.
  • Steward the development and execution of integrated strategic plans and investment strategies for the Laboratories facility footprint, including consideration of major moves, renovations, co-location, consolidation, leasing, and new construction activities.
  • Develop and maintain Lab-level data analyses and strategic performance metrics for optimizing utilization and continuous balancing of facilities space assets.
  • Collaborate with other Strategic Planners to supervise and align footprint management strategies, plans with mission priorities, and corporate long-range development plans.
  • Partner with Facilities Projects and Operations Teams to implement space strategies, plans and projects to ensure corporate space guidelines, policies and procedures are in alignment with the Lab-level footprint management strategies.
  • Organize large sets of data and translate those into practical metrics and graphics to aid in decision making.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical – Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning – Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Judgment and Decision-making – Few precedents and/or procedures are readily available; work requires frequently handling specialized situations that have a moderate to high impact on the department/organization; most work is complex and completed independently by considering different courses of action and refining methods or developing techniques to solve problems; work is typically reviewed only at completion.

  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures, and practices related to specific field.
  • Strong leadership, project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communicator with diverse staff (engineering, maintenance, research staff, support staff, center directors, office directors, executive management, and DOE).
  • Experience navigating teams through change and areas of obscurity.
  • Ability to account for investment and operational inputs and their effects on specific facilities investment opportunities.
  • Ability to generate clear professional-quality graphical floor plan diagrams representing supply and demand elements of building space occupancy plans.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, and IWMS systems (FM:Systems, Archibus, Tririga, etc.).
  • Excellent graphical communications skills including design and development of space program, space plans, test fits, blocking plans and graphical data reports.
  • Knowledge or experience with applying user-centered design, experience offering iterative solutions, knowledge of processes and organizational change capability models.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, present, negotiate and collaborate with management and staff.
  • Ability to understand and interpret architectural drawings and schematics.
  • Knowledge of facilities and infrastructure lifecycle dynamics from long-range capital planning to construction, occupancy, and operational / maintenance considerations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience 

 

Relevant Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Urban / Regional Planning, Engineering, Project Management, Economics, or Human Factors plus five (5) or more years of relevant experience; or Master’s Degree in Architecture, Urban / Regional Planning, Engineering, Project Management, Economics, or Human Factors plus one (1) or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Licenses & Certifications – Registration as a licensed architect or similar relevant certifications desired.

Clearance – Must be able to obtain NREL site security access.

Other – Must pass background, reference, and drug screen.                                                              

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Physical demands and working conditions are those of a typical office environment, including sitting and using a computer for extended periods of time.  Physical effort such as lifting, pulling, or pushing is generally not required.  Position requires close vision, namely for use of computer and reviewing documents.  Position requires occasional travel and outdoor field work, including exposure to weather conditions, traversing uneven or sloping terrain, and exposure to hazards related to logging operations such as slash and equipment.
