Position Summary:
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent leads the team and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, and fairways. Responsibilities include leading, managing, overseeing, training, coaching, and counseling the maintenance team in all golf course activities. This includes monitoring job performance and daily playing course conditions and details for quality standards, maintaining cleanliness and organization of the maintenance facility (to include equipment, materials, and tools), participation in agronomic plans and operations, and keeping accurate and timely records of all business activities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways; schedules work and oversees the maintenance team and the use of equipment.
- Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
- Plans, directs, calibrates, trains, oversees, and assists in pesticide, fertilizer, and plant-protectant applications.
- Leads and participates in the operation and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
- Assists in personnel management, including preparing and delivering evaluations and ensuring safety, coaching, and counseling.
- Participates in the daily assignment of equipment and inspects it for proper use, cleaning, and storage in assigned parking.
- Coordinates with mechanics to ensure preventative maintenance, repairs, and equipment readiness.
- Observe and evaluate playing conditions (moisture, mowing quality, bunker raking, course set-up) to take corrective action or report to the Superintendent.
- Maintains effective employee and public relations.
- Assists the Superintendent in keeping records of maintenance activities, including but not limited to job tracking and fertilizer and plant protectant applications as required by law.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the maintenance program of the golf course tees, fairways, and greens; the planning, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells; pumps and automatic controls
- Follows and ensures maintenance team follows and complies with Club and departmental safety policies to provide a safe work environment.
Experience, Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, and Education:
- Experience leading, developing, training, overseeing, managing, coaching, motivating, and assisting a golf course team.
- A BS, associate degree, or Certification in turf grass management, or relevant experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Understanding of pest control products and their applications.
- Understanding of turf chemical and fertilizer products and their applications.
- Knowledge of irrigation utilization, drainage installation, repair, and maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance procedures, and manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Have a current Florida certification or license for pesticide applications or the ability to acquire a license.
