Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
At 3Degrees, we help organizations large and small take action toward a decarbonized, prosperous future. One way we achieve this is by originating, marketing, selling, and trading environmental commodities such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Carbon Credits, and Clean Fuel Standard Credits. 3Degrees further leverages its market expertise to support utilities in offering compelling options for their customers to address their carbon emissions. 
To underpin these efforts, the research team of our Environmental Markets (EM) division is seeking a passionate and strategic Senior Manager of Operations to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our Research & Analysis (R&A) team. You'll play a key role by leading and managing initiatives that propel the team towards global research and analysis excellence within our industry. This is a full time role reporting to the Director of  Research and Analysis within our Environmental Markets division. This position is open to candidates preferably based within a commutable distance of our San Francisco, CA, Portland, OR, Portland, ME, or New York, NY  offices,  where you'll enjoy a flexible hybrid working environment.  While we have a preference for candidates excited for in-person collaboration working regularly in a 3Degrees office,  exceptional candidates based outside of these cities and looking for a remote opportunity are encouraged to apply.  Remote candidates agree to travel, periodically to 3Degree's offices for training or team collaboration and to conferences and customers as required. Frequency and cadence is team dependent, but on average is 1-6 times annually. 3Degrees does not provide sponsorship and /or relocation assistance for non-nationals in any of our roles. Therefore pre-existing right-to-work status or full work visa for the locations listed above is a prerequisite in order to be considered for this position.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You'll be responsible for creating a best-in-class operating environment that fosters efficiency, scalability, and a deep understanding of our internal stakeholders' needs. You'll foster a culture of continuous improvement, champion a data-driven approach, and spearhead the expansion of R&A capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the global EM team. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop and execute on a comprehensive roadmap for the Research & Analysis team in alignment with the strategic vision and goals of the team, and 3Degrees’ overall goals and market opportunities
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts, identifying and implementing optimizations across all areas of R&A operations. This includes building robust processes, establishing best practices, and creating training materials to ensure knowledge retention
  • Champion a data-driven approach, quantifying the value and ROI of strategic initiatives to stakeholders across the organization
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment, building strong relationships with internal customers (portfolio managers, trading & origination teams) and leadership
  • Spearhead the expansion of R&A capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the global EM market. This includes anticipating new market requirements and proactively developing the necessary skills and expertise within the team
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for R&A during strategic growth initiatives, translating growth strategy into actionable plans and advocating for necessary resources in alignment with financial objectives
  • Develop and manage the R&A team's budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation to support strategic initiatives
  • Develop metrics to assess how research insights influence investment decisions and portfolio performance
  • Implement a robust risk management framework to identify, mitigate, and monitor risks associated with research and data analysis within the environmental commodities market This includes data quality control, vendor management, and information security protocols
  • Stay abreast of relevant environmental market regulations and ensure the team's research and analysis activities comply with these regulations
ABOUT YOU
You are a seasoned operations leader with a proven track record of success in driving strategic initiatives and optimizing business processes within a fast-paced, data-driven environment, ideally within the trading or financial services industry. Your experience demonstrates a strong understanding of quantitative analysis and the ability to leverage data insights to inform strategic decision-making. You possess a deep understanding of project management methodologies and possess the ability to translate strategy into actionable plans. You are a strong communicator with the ability to influence and lead cross-functional teams. Your passion for sustainability fuels your desire to work for a company making a positive impact on the planet. We believe an operations professional with the following skills and subject matter expertise will have the best opportunity to succeed in this role:
  • 8+ years of experience in operations management, preferably within the financial services industry, with a strong focus on research and analysis teams
  • Proven ability to lead and optimize R&A operations, including experience with data management, workflow optimization, and knowledge management
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic initiatives to improve efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of research and analysis delivered to traders and other internal stakeholders. This includes experience executing on strategic initiatives for a global team
  • Deep understanding of the critical role R&A plays in the success of the markets division. You possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on data quality and integrity
  • Working knowledge of the environmental commodities market a plus
  • Expertise in data management tools and methodologies (data warehousing, data governance, data security). Experience with quantitative analysis techniques and the ability to translate data insights into actionable recommendations is a must
  • Experience supporting operations across a global environment
  • Understanding of how data models are built and utilized by trading teams, with a focus on identifying opportunities for data manipulation and automation of research tasks (a plus)
  • Excellent project management and leadership skills with the ability to lead and motivate cross-functional project teams of researchers, analysts, and data scientists
  • Proven experience establishing frameworks to measure and track the impact of a R&A team's work on portfolio performance
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders (researchers, traders, portfolio managers) and external vendors
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and resources effectively
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • A passion for innovation and continuous improvement within the research and analysis function
  • Passion for sustainability and the principles of a B Corp, even if it is new for you
  • Experience with risk management frameworks and regulatory compliance within financial services (a plus)

HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS

Within the First 30 Days:
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of 3Degrees' business model and strategic priorities
  • Develop a strong grasp of the Environmental Markets (EM) division's structure and goals
  • Meet key stakeholders across the organization, including research analysts, traders, portfolio managers, and leadership teams
  • Familiarize yourself with the current R&A team structure, processes, tools, and data sources used for research and analysis
  • Begin building strong working relationships with internal customers and colleagues
Within the First 90 Days:
  • Conduct a thorough analysis of the R&A team's current capabilities and identify areas for improvement
  • Develop a preliminary roadmap outlining key research and analysis initiatives aligned with departmental and company goals
  • Champion a data-driven approach by identifying key metrics to assess the impact of research insights on investment decisions and portfolio performance
  • Implement initial steps for continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on streamlining processes and establishing best practices
  • Begin fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment, actively seeking feedback and building trust
Within the First 6 Months:
  • Finalize the R&A team roadmap, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and market opportunities
  • Lead the implementation of key continuous improvement initiatives across R&A operations, including data management, workflow optimization, and knowledge management
  • Develop and present a data-driven budget for the R&A team, outlining resource allocation for strategic priorities
  • Demonstrate strong leadership by motivating and mentoring the R&A team, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning
  • Spearhead initial efforts to expand the R&A team's capabilities to meet evolving market needs, potentially including identifying skills gaps and developing training programs
Within 1 Year:
  • Successfully implemented the R&A team roadmap, delivering impactful research and analysis that supports the EM division's growth objectives
  • Your execution has resulted in a high-performing R&A team known for its efficiency, data-driven approach, and ability to translate research insights into actionable recommendations
  • Established a robust risk management framework for research and data analysis within the environmental commodities market
  • Fostered a culture of continuous improvement across the R&A team, where team members are inspired to drive and support effective knowledge transfer and process optimization
  • Established trusted relationships with the global R&A team and stakeholders, fostering effective communication and alignment across geographic boundaries

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The following compensation and benefits information is based on 3Degrees’ good faith estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future:
  • Compensation: The starting base salary for this position is $150,000 to $180,000 in the US. Total compensation for a successful candidate will exceed the base pay as it includes Supplemental Pay. Base pay is dependent upon many factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, work experience, relevant training, business needs, and market demands. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future
  • Benefits: This position is eligible for a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, flexible paid time off, and more. Additional information regarding the benefits available for this position can be found here        
  • Supplemental Pay: This position may be eligible to participate in discretionary bonus programs based on personal, department and company goals
