About the Role

Opentrons liquid handling robots are deployed in a wide variety of labs, from synthetic biology to clinical testing, and our product lineup continues to grow. The Technical Writer position is part of Opentrons’ Technical Content team (embedded within Product), which publishes and maintains the materials that inform users what our hardware and software products do, and how to use them.

The goal of Technical Content at Opentrons is to communicate clearly, completely, and timely to further our overall mission: to empower life scientists to do their best work through an accessible and community-focused lab automation ecosystem.

This is where you come in; not only delivering high-quality documentation but helping to expand what Opentrons products can do by teaching our users to integrate them with the broader world of lab automation.

This is a full-time temporary position. Contract duration is typically 6 months, but could change at the discretion of the company.

What You Will Do

By joining the Technical Content team, you can expect to:

  • Be embedded in the Product team, but collaborate cross-functionally with software, hardware, and other teams throughout the organization.
  • Work with internal subject matter experts to comprehensively document the HTTP API that underpins first-party and third-party software for controlling Opentrons robots.
  • Contribute to the Technical Content team by reviewing, proofreading, and providing feedback on other Technical Content publications.
  • Help grow the Opentrons community by tailoring content to our users’ needs.

What We Are Looking For

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience writing and publishing technical documentation, especially complex, interconnected sets of documents
  • You have a proven record of tracking down and verifying information from subject matter experts to deliver content on tight deadlines
  • Experience in robotics, automated liquid handling, or lab-based biology strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Managing written content on GitHub or worked with open-source software
  • Familiar with RESTful APIs and are comfortable with using them yourself to research and confirm the content of your writing
  • You’ve collaborated with teams in Jira or a similar ticketing system
  • You can work independently, managing your own time and juggling competing priorities without significant supervision
  • You have the ability to go the extra mile to take documentation from concept to draft to publication
  • You love talking about code and technology and can work collaboratively with engineering, product, and marketing teams

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Limited physical effort required outside of the regular commute (hybrid role)

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $36 and $44 per hour; however base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.  We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates.
