Director of Developmental English-Lyon College, a dynamic, expanding institution, invites applications for a Director of
Developmental English, beginning in August 2024. All candidates must have a master’s degree in English; a PhD is preferred. The English department seeks a rhetoric-composition colleague with extensive experience in developmental writing. The successful candidate will:
- Teach seven courses annually, primarily in Developmental English, with opportunities to teach composition I and II as needed by the department;
- Teach one section of the developmentally-oriented first-year seminar
- Provide effective instruction that encompasses active and meaningful learning activities and frequent and timely feedback to students;
- Coordinate with the English faculty to prepare and/or maintain course syllabi for Developmental English, adhering to established program objectives;
- Participate in the development/revision and implementation of program assessment plans and utilize feedback to improve learning outcomes;
- Provide additional academic support to at-risk students including mentoring.
Additional responsibilities will include service on college committees beginning in the second year. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of philosophies of liberal learning as well as the distinctive nature of teaching at a small liberal arts college. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the secondary or baccalaureate level is required; experience at a small liberal arts college is desired. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Academic Support and the campus-wide Student Success team to impact student retention positively. Direct experience working with under-resourced students and historically underserved populations will be beneficial.
Lyon College is a private, selective liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It is located in Batesville, Arkansas, a safe and historic town of 11,000 that serves as commercial, medical, social, and governmental hub for an eight-county area and named by USA Today as the best city to live in in Arkansas. The College currently enrolls almost 600 undergraduate students from 29 states and 14 foreign countries. Entering freshmen have an average high school GPA of 3.7.
