Job Description

Viterbo University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, Tenure-track, Graduate Faculty, MS-SLP Program, Assistant/Associate Professor who will work collaboratively with the Chair, Director of Clinical Education, other university Faculty, to provide high-quality, evidence-based teaching for students aspiring to become speech-language pathologists. The appointment will start August 16, 2024. The successful candidate will uphold accreditation standards and commitment to the philosophy, mission, and vision of Viterbo University, The College of Nursing and Health, and the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences. Salary is competitive with other private institutions of similar size, mission, and educational philosophy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching (65% Effort):

  1. Accepts accountability for facilitating effective teaching/learning activities in the classroom, labs, and/or in the Clinical Simulation Learning Center.
  2. Prepares content and syllabi for assigned courses according to the curricular plan and graduate outcomes.
  3. Demonstrates expertise in developing, conducting, and evaluating essential graduate-level learning experiences within the classroom, lab, and/or Clinical Simulation Learning Center.
  4. Conducts course assessment activities to evaluate and enhance graduate student learning.
  5. Makes recommendations for resource acquisitions.
  6. Assists in preparation of class and clinical lab/simulation schedules.
  7. Guides students in conducting/completing their scholarly projects.
  8. Teaches the following Fall Courses
    1. Introduction to Phonetics (Undergraduate)
    2. Voice & Resonance Disorders (Graduate)
    3. Experimental Phonetics (Graduate)
  9. Teaches the following Spring Courses
    1. Intercultural Communication (Undergraduate)
    2. Dysphagia (Grad)
    3. Directed Research: Capstone Project (Graduate)

Scholarship (10% Effort)

  1. Participates in an area of Boyer's Model of scholarship (see below) as appropriate for graduate teaching faculty.
    1. The scholarship of discovery that includes original/basic research.
    2. The scholarship of integration that involves synthesis of information across disciplines, topics, and/or time (e.g. interprofessional education);
    3. The scholarship of application or engagement (e.g. Cooperative State Research)
    4. The scholarship of systematic teaching and learning processes.
  2. Participates in the public dissemination of peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
  3. Participates in continuing and formal educational opportunities.
  4. Attends national and regional professional conferences.
  5. Participates in grant writing as appropriate.

Service (15% Effort)

  1. Shares talents as a resource person/mentor to university colleagues and/or students.
  2. Participates in Departmental, College, and University committees.
  3. Participates in ongoing quality improvement/accreditation activities.
  4. Engages in local community and university service activities.
  5. Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations.
  6. Participates in professional activities of the university and the College of Nursing and Health.

Student Advising (10% Effort)

  1. Participates in and documents graduate student advising activities.
  2. Assists with recruitment and retention of qualified graduate students.

General Requirements/Qualifications:

Meets the requirements for the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor at Viterbo University, the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences, and the relevant accreditation bodies. ABD candidates who have a scheduled defense date prior to August 1, 2024, are encouraged to apply. Must be authorized to work in the United States. Viterbo University is unable to sponsor or take over the sponsorship of a USA Employment Visa for international candidates.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree (one of the following): Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Communication Disorders and Sciences (or closely related discipline) or, Doctor of Education (EdD).
  • Evidence of scholarship or scholarship potential in some aspect of voice and/or acoustic phonetics.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Preferred undergraduate degree or undergraduate minor in: Vocal Performance; Music Theater; or Music.
  • Preferred master's degree (MS or MA) in communication Disorders and Sciences or Music/Vocal Performance.
  • Previous teaching experience in higher education.
