Job Description

POSITION: Technical Director

LOCATION: San Antonio, TX

HOURS: FT, including evenings, weekends & holidays per show schedule

COMPENSATION: $60k - $70k

ABOUT THE POSITION

The successful candidate will be part of the Production department of ATG San Antonio and work with the Director of Production and our stagehand team directly to budget, plan and realize all the production aspects of events at ATG San Antonio venues. Primarily focused on The Espee, the Technical Director will also assist with productions at the Majestic and Empire and in the maintenance and upkeep of ATG San Antonio equipment and facilities.

The Technical Director joins an enterprising, industrious production department that includes over a hundred of the most experienced IATSE stagehands from across the country. After significant recent investments from our corporate leadership, ATG San Antonio’s Production Department is pleased to be able to operate high-end production gear such as d&b audiotechnik V-Series line arrays and a full moving light rig with grandMA3 Light console.

PEOPLE, PLACES, and THINGS

ATG San Antonio currently operates three venues in the San Antonio area:

  • Formerly known as Sunset Station, The Espee is a 3,175 capacity boutique amphitheater nestled in the heartbeat of downtown San Antonio. Featuring nine unique event venue options, The Espee hosts a variety of event types including headlining musical acts, large-scale corporate events, and community-focused private events.
  • Built in 1929, the Majestic Theatre’s distinct Spanish Mediterranean design is a signature example of architect John Eberson’s atmospheric stylings. With a capacity of 2,264, the Majestic is the home of Broadway San Antonio which brings the high-end of Broadway touring to San Antonio. Additionally, the Majestic hosts an active schedule of live music, comedy, and other entertainment.
  • After extensive renovations by the Las Casas Foundation, the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre was reopened in its gloriously gilded original form in 1998. Featuring a more intimate capacity of 856, the Empire Theatre brings a diverse lineup including small-scale theatrical programming, jazz, and comedy to downtown San Antonio. Recently, it has served as the backdrop for several successful comedy specials that can be seen on the likes of HBO, Showtime, and Netflix.

The Technical Director will:

• Supervise labor calls for local IATSE stagehands along with any additional contracted labor and or vendors for production.

• Manage the Stage crew, estimate labor and material costs, technical coordination, advance details with touring companies, promotors, and rental clients.

  • Prepare purchase orders, invoices, settlement information and production department payroll, as required.
  • Advance shows with artist and promotor production teams, scheduling event days (including load in and load out), rental equipment, and trucking when necessary.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other ATG San Antonio departments on all department needs for specific events.
  • Supervise events onsite and on day of show as required; coordinate calls with ATG San Antonio’s stagehands; coordinate all aspects of the event day including outside rental of equipment, catering, hospitality, parking, and other specific production needs.
  • Prepare event settlements on the night of the show, working with the Director of Production, the IATSE steward, and outside vendors to collect necessary settlement documents.
  • Assist Director of Production with payroll for union stagehands.
  • Assist the Production Department in the upkeep and maintenance of ATG San Antonio facilities and equipment.
  • Work with the Director of Production on any related projects as requested and required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE and SKILLS

• Minimum 5 years of experience in live theatre production, touring concert or theatre production, event production or technical direction and/or production management venue experience.

• Proficiency in Microsoft office. Ability to read and understand technical drawings, proficiency in CAD or Vectorworks is a plus.

  • Comprehensive understanding of all aspects of technical theatre. Functional competency in rigging, audio, video, lighting production, stage operations and logistics.
  • Competence with moving light utilization & operation, grandMA lighting consoles, Yamaha sound consoles, and Dante audio networks is a plus.
  • ETCP rigging certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with and managing union crews.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to take initiative, multi-task and work graciously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends as requested and necessary.
  • Should be able to assist in lifting materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb stairs regularly, occasionally work on a theatre grid and on catwalks above the ceiling.
  • Must be able to work in the high decibel level environment of concert rehearsal and performance.
  • Must be able to communicate by phone with clients as well as in person.
  • Clean driving record and the ability to operate a 26ft box truck.
