SUMMARY

The Director of Strategy is an important member of GLIDE’s Impact and Strategy team and reports to the Chief Impact and Strategy Officer. They will have primary responsibility for driving the implementation of our 5-year strategic plan “GLIDE Forward” and serve as the in-house consultant to lead strategic projects across the organization and support planning activities. This role requires a highly resourceful individual with excellent communication skills who can take the lead role to collaborate with project owners and key stakeholders to define and align project objectives, agree on deliverables, and secure resources to reach desired outcomes and impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with CISO and Impact and Strategy Management team (ISM) to drive implementation of the strategic vision for the organization - GLIDE Forward - and provide guidance and oversight in the development of actionable and quantifiable plans to achieve desired results and overall intended impact.
  • Design and facilitate processes to align organization with strategy. Articulate, design and operationalize strategic initiatives to include creation of division-based work plans, milestones, work groups and data metrics.
  • Directly manage selected strategic initiatives within the CISO’s portfolio related to GLIDE’s organizational priorities requiring cross-functional coordination and resource allocation.
  • Act as strategic advisor and thought partner to the CISO and Senior Leadership Team to review and refine strategy to include new ideas, initiatives, opportunities and challenges that may impact and/or enhance the successful implementation of GLIDE Forward.
  • Facilitate the articulation GLIDE Forward and its strategy to ensure it is communicated throughout the organization, so it is easily understood by employees at all levels.
  • Develop and manage GLIDE’s strategy management system and processes.
  • Communicate GLIDE Forward strategy, targets, and initiatives to internal and external stakeholders. Lead development of content and materials to communicate strategy including, but not limited to, PowerPoint presentations, concept papers, white papers, reports, etc.
  • Identify and cultivate external strategic partnerships critical to the expansion and development of GLIDE’s strategic initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA degree with at least 8+ years’ experience or a graduate degree with at least 5+ years’ experience leading strategic planning and implementation processes or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strategy/management consulting experience highly desired.
  • Experience in a complex, non-profit environment a plus.
  • Experience in a strategy role at either a top tier strategy consulting firm, the strategy development function or senior leader of a social impact, social service organization.
  • Sound judgment and strong leadership skills; experience developing staff professionally and building solid teams.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and communicate written and verbal reports of key ideas to senior leadership. Strong analytical skills. Ability to evaluate programs and interpret outcomes.
  • Ability to work with a variety of internal and external constituencies. A team player who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding work environment. Ability to effectively run meetings and lead work groups to achieve defined goals.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, balance multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and thrive in a complex environment with multiple and shifting priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work effectively across cultures. Demonstrates a commitment to learning, communicating, and working respectfully with people different from themselves.

  • Resilience in response to setbacks, and an ability to anticipate and overcome barriers to success; Ability to respond proactively and positively to ambiguity and change.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to see details of objects at close range;
  • Ability to hear within normal range, and communicate effectively in person or via telephone in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking, including a diverse population;
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, and access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to use keyboard with manual and finger dexterity and wrist-finger speed sufficient to perform repetitive actions efficiently for extended periods of time;
  • Requires physical ability to sit and keyboard for long periods of time (stationed at computer 75% of work time);
  • This person must take frequent short breaks, integrate stretching into her/his daily duties to avoid musculoskeletal disorders;
  • Activities that occur frequently are: standing, walking and handling. Activities that occur occasionally are: climbing staircases. Activities that occur infrequently are: bending, squatting, crouching, kneeling, twisting, reaching straight, above, and below shoulder level with both shoulders individually or at the same time, carrying and lifting up to 25 pounds;
  • Ability to move about. Will come and go from the work area repeatedly throughout the day. Ability to move quickly to address emergency or potentially dangerous situations.

  • Fast paced, with frequent interruptions, demanding, social services office environment;
  • Noise level is moderate to noisy and lighting is conducive to completion of work;
  • The employee may be exposed to air borne pathogens;
  • GLIDE’s buildings are located in the Tenderloin. Due to our surroundings, it is important to always be aware of what’s going on around you while walking around the neighborhood. GLIDE maintains an "open door" policy to the community and its clients, who frequently enter and leave the building.
