Job Description

Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB), an arts education nonprofit founded in 1910 with a mission to transform lives by providing equitable access to music education and arts experiences, is seeking a motivated, creative, passionate, and community-oriented Music Therapist to join our music therapy team! The Music Therapist will lead weekly group music therapy sessions for populations such as adults with developmental disabilities and work cross-departmentally providing adaptive music lessons and/or music education classes at community partner sites and at the Community Music School.

CMCB offers the unique opportunity to work with nearly all age groups in clinical, community, and school settings. This position is a great fit for clinicians who are committed to providing community music therapy services or clinicians who are looking to explore working with new populations. Like all roles at CMCB, there is significant investment in professional development training, mentorship from senior staff, including supervision by a Board-Certified Music Therapist, and opportunity for future promotion within the organization.

Status: Part-time hourly, exempt

Start Date: ASAP / May 2024

Schedule: 4-8 hours per week in-person, Monday - Friday between 8:30-6:30 (varies by site and client requests) with room for growth

Reports to: Community Engagement and Clinical Manager (CECM)

Music Therapy

  • Design and provide culturally inclusive and accessible music therapy sessions that address client needs
  • Collaborate with music therapy team to set customized treatment goals for clients
  • Document reports related to individual clients or client groups
  • Develop and maintain constructive working relationships with community site staff
  • Communicate with caregivers as necessary regarding client progress
  • Work with clients and staff to develop mid and end-of-year culminating events when applicable
  • Participate in curriculum development and program planning

Administrative

  • Attend events and meetings with administrators at other school and community sites as needed
  • Attend required meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Participate in bi-weekly supervision, mid-year, and annual performance reviews

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must have MT-BC or the eligibility to sit for certification exam within the next 3 months
  • Must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S as CMCB is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time
  • Minimum of three (3) months working with adults with disabilities and/or school-age populations, six (6) months preferred
  • Must be adept at and comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Access to reliable transportation to and from sites
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as professional values and knowledgeable to their application in music therapy
  • Proficiency in clinical musicianship, clinical improvisation, voice, and accompanying instrument.
  • Ability to adapt work and to effectively plan, facilitate, and document sessions
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Positive attitude and growth mindset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and Google Suite

Preferred

  • Knowledge of and experience in the arts, education, and public school settings
  • Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is highly desirable
  • Further opportunities available for candidates with demonstrated supervisory experience

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the person in this position must be able to to remain in a stationary position 50-75% of the time. They need to occasionally move around the space to access teaching supplies and instruments and must be able to use a variety of instruments. They must also converse with clients in a normal classroom setting and discern and recognize changes in tone, pitch, rhythm, and volume. They may occasionally move or transport supplies and instruments up to 10 pounds.
