Novastar Academy is uniquely positioned to enhance young people’s ability to understand their
place in the community and the world, improve their ability to make judgments and take action,
and become active and thriving global citizens.
Novastar Academy is a proposed charter school with the vision of creating a new generation
learning experience to support the unique needs and goals of each student using a
personalized, mastery-based instructional model in a blended environment. Novastar’s school
design includes world standards of excellence (knowledge), inclusive global competence (skills),
and a nurtured community of learners (values, attitudes), The four elements of the KED Global
Network ( http://www.kunskapsskolan.com/ ) personalized learning model are incorporated into
Novastar‘s systems of curriculum, pedagogy and organization of learning.
A unique curriculum framework, processes and pedagogy offer a differentiating perspective on
the educational process by focusing on both Colorado and international academic standards,
integrating Career and Technical Education learning pathways, and incorporating
interdisciplinary projects using culturally relevant curriculum in Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts, Math curriculum within the Personalized Learning Path customized for every
student. Student Mentorship Paths is a unique Novastar systems designed to facilitate the
development of self-regulated learners.
In our program, every student develops a digital portfolio to include extended evidence of
demonstrated competencies in academic standards, skills, technical certificates, and
endorsements validated through IMS Global Consortium ( http://www.imsglobal.org /) Our
students co-create their personalized graduation pathways to include: future career plans
development, academic credits, technical training certificates, demonstrated competencies
showcased in e-portfolio, matched to their focus of study.

Position and Expectations:
The Board Director will support the work of Novastar Academy and provide mission-based
leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations will be led by the school’s
administrative team, the board - school administration relationship is a partnership within the
outlined board polices and procedures.

Roles:
  • Governance - oversight of operations, including financial accountability
  • Support - fundraising, public relations and providing individual expertise
  • Planning - mission and vision statements and strategic planning
  • Advocacy - strategic thinking, action and public policy
Responsibilities:
  • Govern: the board evaluates itself and the organization, ensures financial and program accountability and transparency, sets meeting agendas, creates necessary committees, keeps minutes, and recruits effective member
  • Plan: creates the mission and vision, sets goals and objectives, develops a strategic plan and fashions organizational procedures
  • Oversee resources: the board ensures sufficient funds are raised and spent appropriately
  • Manage: hires and, if necessary, fires the directors, evaluates program’s performance
  • Comply: insurance, file required papers and act as a trustee, creates and bides by the bylaws
Expectations:
  • To adhere to the Organization’s standards of business conduct and ethics including but not limited to its policies on conflicts of interest and its organizational by-laws
  • To attend Board meetings and applicable committee and subcommittee meetings annually
  • To serve as an advocate for Novastar Academy in efforts to obtain significant financial support from other possible funding sources
  • To stay informed about Novastar Academy’s vision and operations, including review of all minutes of Board and committee meetings, financial statements and all other materials distributed to Board and committee members
  • To actively participate in, and take responsibility for, making decisions on organizational and policy issues and other matters appropriate for decision by the Board
  • To maintain supportive and professional relations with other directors and school’s administration
  • To communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with members of the board and school’s staff
  • To act in the best interests of Novastar Academy in accordance with the fiduciary standards of care and loyalty to which the Board is subject under state and federal law
  • To assist Novastar Academy in the identification and recruitment of engaged and committed
  • Board member candidates and school’s administrative staff.
