Role: Head of US Excess Casualty

Location: Chicago or New York

Department: Underwriting

The Role

The Head of US Excess Casualty will be responsible for all aspects of marketing, underwriting, building, growing and managing a profitable book of US XS casualty business.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Execute strategy to enter US XS Casualty market building a diverse profitable portfolio of business. Drive and manage growth and profitability of the portfolio.
  • Effectively market Canopius’ underwriting capabilities, appetite and generate risk opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development /modification of proprietary coverage forms and rating models to support targeted business.
  • Hire, train, develop and retain underwriting team to assist in achieving profitable growth. Provide guidance, career development and managerial oversight.
  • Perform all aspects of the underwriting process including risk assessment, underwriting analysis, and determining risk adequacy. Properly rate, quote and bind risk in line with underwriting guidelines, pricing tool and risk appetite. Actively participate in client meetings to secure important underwriting information to assist with decision making.
  • Develop and maintain strong broker relations, with special attention to wholesale distributors. Identify key trading partners and build long term sustainable relationships.
  • Communicate market intel surrounding competitors and brokers. Stay up to date on market developments.
  • Provide up to date information surrounding economic and legal issues impacting the various industries supported. Develop action plan where outlook is unfavorable.
  • Actively participate in casualty emerging risk discussions and risk development scenario projects as requested.
  • Ensure all aspects of compliance surrounding file documentation and decisions are properly maintained for regulatory and other reporting requirements meeting all Canopius standards.
  • Provide monthly management reports as well as other specified reports in a timely fashion.
  • Actively participate and represent Canopius at select industry events.
  • Help to identify and develop new areas of opportunity and growth, including innovative in products and services that Canopius does not participate.

Skills and experience:

  • Fifteen plus years of experience in the casualty market, with specific experience underwriting specialty excess casualty supporting mid to large clients.
  • Strong wholesale broker relationships countrywide. Retail relationships will also be plus.
  • College Degree as well as CPCU or other industry designations
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work under pressure as part of a growing team and self-motivated to work both independently as well as part of a team, with strong collaboration skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • IT literacy including advanced skills in Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other Microsoft Office applications.
