Job Description
A niche family-owned Nursery Company in Sarasota County, Florida is seeking a future Head Grower. The company provides ornamental liners with attention to quality, detail and is known for their outstanding customer service The ideal candidate will onboard as an assistant Head Grower and take over as Head Grower next year when their current Head Grower is set to retire. The nursery offers a wide selection of ornamental liners and is continually adding to their product line. Some of their specialty plants include Brindabella Roses, Sun Parasol Mandeville, Hibiscus, Sun Trumpets, Catharanthus and more.
Key responsibilities
  • Working alongside the head grower and gaining full knowledge of the position
  • Overseeing all aspects of planting, feeding, fertilizing, and irrigation scheduling
  • Monitoring and adjusting greenhouse environments such as humidity, ventilation and temperatures.
  • Implement and oversee any potential pest or disease issues and treat accordingly
  • Manage production schedules, including propagation, liner planting and spacing for new plants
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure high-quality standards are being met
  • Order and maintain stock nursery growing supplies
  • Maintain accurate documentation on any chemical applications, fertilizer regimes and growth observations
    Key qualifications for consideration
  • A bachelor's degree in horticulture, plant science, or a related field
  • 4+ years' experience in a commercial greenhouse or nursery setting with focus on production and propagation
  • Knowledge of the Apocynaceae and Asteraceae families of plants
  • Proven longevity in previous positions
  • In depth knowledge of plant pathology, nutrition, and integrated pest management
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must currently reside in Florida and have a valid U.S. driver's license
