Job Summary:

The overall purpose of the Regional Fleet Safety Manager position is to partner with General Managers, Regional Operations Leaders, Regional Safety Directors, Transportation Managers, Operations Managers, Supervisors, and Drivers to reduce the likelihood of accidents / injuries by implementing fleet safety policies and procedures that meet or exceed Federal, State, and local regulatory requirements. Reporting to and working closely with the Director of Fleet Safety, this role has visibility to and works in partnership with Fleet Safety, Safety, and Operations to provide training and support to site Fleet leadership and drivers post incident or accident, onboarding, and safety management. In addition, the role is also responsible for monitoring key safety performance indicators and providing feedback to appropriate management personnel.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Analyze issues that impact fleet safety and pursue effective courses of action.
  • Educate drivers on proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections and monitor performance in region.
  • Conduct driver ride-along and driver following activities to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, and company policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and analyze driver scorecards to identify issues. Work with managers and drivers to address identified deficiencies in performance.
  • Assist in developing standard operating procedures that may be used by plants as a training tools and operator guides.
  • Provide guidance and support to transportation managers and supervisors on how to effectively coach drivers who exhibit unsafe behaviors identified by on-board cameras, HOS violations, roadside inspections, incident reports, citations, etc.
  • Perform targeted DOT style audits, communicate results to appropriate levels of management, partner with plant management to develop plans to address identified deficiencies, and conduct follow-up audits to ensure effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Develop and work with plants to train transportation staff to conduct self-audits designed to improve performance.
  • Monitor Safety management systems, on-board cameras, and other technologies to address critical driving events such as rapid deceleration, speeding events, hard braking, etc. Review driver DVIR's and other paperwork for accuracy. Provide feedback to drivers and plants to promote improved accuracy and completeness of documents. Complete reports and regional reviews.
  • Partner with plants and drivers to ensure transportation managers, supervisors, and drivers are trained and understand how to properly interact with the Driver behavior. FMCSA, DOT violations, recording events, citations, incidents, and corresponding retraining.
  • Respond and be on-call for driver accidents or incidents. Effectively communicate with managers, supervisors, drivers, law enforcement personnel, customers, and the motoring public in a way that demonstrates professionalism and Darling's commitment to safety.
  • Create and distribute various standard and ad hoc reports to appropriate levels of management.
  • Act as member of Vehicle Accident Review Board and Safety Committee for assigned area.
  • Be a Subject Matter Expert resource to local plants for safety and regulatory issues.
  • Assist the Corporate DOT Compliance Manager and Corporate Fleet Technology Operations with Federal, State, and local issues upon request.
  • Actively contribute to companywide safety projects and initiatives as required.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in transportation, safety, or business-related field desired.
  • 5 - 8 years of professional experience in DOT safety compliance within a manufacturing or transportation environment.
  • Successful record of accomplishment in developing and implementing fleet safety programs that reduced overall work-related accident and injury costs.
  • Experience with Union environment.
  • Ability to build effective business relationships with transportation management and lead by positive influence, while coaching for success.
  • Experience with event recorders, ELD systems, and safety management programs.
  • Proficient in accident analysis (or able to successfully complete highway accident course within 6 months).
  • Ability to investigate highway accidents to determine root cause and develop corrective and preventative actions.
  • Able to climb and work at heights of 20 feet with proper PPE.
  • A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is preferred but not Required
  • DOT enforcement experience helpful.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to travel frequently at 50%.
  • Work will be performed on all shifts. Some weekend work may be necessary.
  • Above average computer skills in a networked environment with knowledge of MS Office products.


Language Skills:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret Federal, State, and local regulations, training technical journals, and diagrams. Ability to listen and communicate effectively with managers, supervisors, drivers, law enforcement personnel, customers, and the motoring public to carry out responsibilities or respond to common inquires. Ability to develop presentations to be delivered to groups and management.


Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division and to do this using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret graphs and diagrams.


Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Frequently required to work in hot, cold, wet, loud, and dirty locations.
  • Frequently working in environments that are exposed to the elements
