Summary

 

The Director of Accounting will lead, guide, and direct the Accounting department and team members, while also serving as the Accounting liaison with the executive team and other departments. This role ensures the accuracy of the financial statements, the timeliness of financial information preparation, and the optimization of accounting procedures to support the company's goals. The right candidate should be willing and able to dive into the details as necessary to review transactions and practices for GAAP compliance, strength of internal controls, and opportunities for policy and process improvements and efficiencies.

 

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer (CEO)

Type: Exempt / Full-time

Salary: $126,583 annually

Location: Remote with occasional office time and travel required; candidates must reside in one of the following states: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, or Wyoming.

 

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the overall functioning of the accounting department, ensuring all deadlines are met and directs/assists the Accounting Manager with issues and improvements as necessary.
  • Reviews monthly financial results with Accounting Manager; presents financial statements to internal stakeholders with discussion points and questions.
  • Prepares and presents periodic financial presentations to the Board.
  • Works with CEO directly to help with strategy and internal policies; participates in annual business planning meetings with the leadership team.
  • Ensures a strong accounting and operational control environment to safeguard assets, minimize business risks, and improve operations.
  • Leads the annual budgeting process; coordinates, provides actual and historical data, improves processes for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Oversees the annual audit and tax filing preparation by external accountants; prepares or reviews documentation requests; Primary contact with external accountants.
  • Approves Wire and ACH payments within established approval limits.
  • Masters and manages accounting software products and modules; creates new reports; leads new accounting software implementations.
  • Develops and maintains a best-in-class accounting department; manages staffing levels and workload to uphold work/life balance; meets or exceeds deliverable and deadline expectations; cultivates a motivated environment of trust, teamwork, and accountability within team and across the organization.
  • Documents and conducts annual performance appraisals with direct reports; creates appropriate professional development plans for team members based on their individual strengths, development needs, career aspirations and abilities.
  • Complete ad hoc analysis and projects as needed and continuously strive for ongoing improvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by CEO.

Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years experience in accounting roles of increasing responsibility
  • 3+ years experience leading an accounting team
  • Previous public accounting experience preferred
  • Proven success leveraging technology to create efficiencies
  • Ability to lead a team and collaborate across departments
  • Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products, including superior proficiency using Excel
  • Experience with Sage Intacct a plus
  • Solid understanding of GAAP, and ability to review/interpret/implement new accounting pronouncements

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting preferred
  • CPA license
  • Must reside in one of the following states: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, or Wyoming.
