Job Description

Title: Technical Director

Immediate Supervisor: Senior Operations Manager

Supervision Exercised: Stagehands, Production Crew,

General Statement of Duties:

The Technical Director is responsible for managing the overall backstage operations of rental and presented events offered within City Springs and the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center. This position is responsible for managing the technical coordination of lighting, sound, and staging for all events. This position oversees technical equipment, trains technical employees, as well as assists incoming groups to maintain the safety of the equipment and individuals. The Technical Director will also act as the safety warden for all live events on the City Springs campus as well as participate in the strategic planning and implementation of department programs.

The Technical Director is responsible for duties that directly support the production of performances and events at City Springs. This position directly oversees the planning and execution of production information for performances and events, coordinates logistical information and communicates that information to stakeholders, and provides general support to the operation at City Springs. The Technical Director works closely with a large number of internal and external partners and manages multiple projects concurrently with great attention to detail. City Springs consists of a 1,100 seat Byers Theatre, the 400 seat Studio Theatre, Conference Center and Rooftop Terrace bar, Outdoor City Green, and CityBar, where the Technical Director will be involved with all rentable spaces.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Advances and coordinates production aspects of all events and activities at City Springs with an emphasis on the Performing Arts Center, Studio Theatre, and City Green.
  • Provides an advanced level of expertise in all aspects of technical theatre production including but not limited to lighting, audio, projections, rigging and flys, and scenic elements.
  • Produces clean and presentable floor plans, layouts and light plots utilizing CAD technology.
  • Meets and works with clients and prospects to determine needs and suggest methods for productions.
  • Creates production budget for crew and rentals, and provide advice toward producing state of the art events within reasonable budgets.
  • Negotiates for and procures production equipment and services from rental companies.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with production vendors and service providers.
  • Manages both IATSE and local crew members.
  • Manages the production department in a manner that reflects the highest standards of respect, professionalism and customer service.
  • Helps formulate policies relating to production services and implements those policies.
  • Demonstrates a talent for amicable problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Maintains files and records of all current and historical projects, productions and events.
  • Attends regular staff meetings and participates as a management team member.
  • Serves as manager on duty for selected events.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations and General Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree related to Theatrical Production from an accredited institution.
  • Five to eight years relevant experience in a performing arts center environment,
  • Experience working with both IATSE and non-union crews.
  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of production technology, including demonstrable expertise in stage rigging, sound reinforcement and/or performance lighting.
  • Training or experience in Computer Aided Design, preferably Vectorworks
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. Excellent people skills.
  • A passion for the performing arts and the ability to provide excellence in their production.
  • Must pass post-offer background check and drug screen.

Ability to self-direct and manage a high number of competing projects simultaneously, with impeccable attention to detail and the ability to adhere to established and non-flexible deadlines for project completion
