POSITION: CONTOLLER
CLASSIFICATION: SALARY / EXEMPT
REPORT TO: CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
DIRECT REPORTS: ACCOUNTING STAFF
SALARY: DOE $90,000 - $100,000
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
The Controller is responsible for developing, managing, and maintaining reliable accounting information and reporting on income, expenses, assets, liability, and capital for management planning and decision making and for fulfillment of financial reporting requirements. Reconciles GL and bank accounts. Ensures that reports, accounts, systems, policies and practices adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Manages the activities of the accounting department, ensuring the staff perform their roles efficiently and accurately, in compliance with credit union policies and procedures. Responsible for overseeing departmental staff, procedures and recommending improvements. Responsible for remaining current with processes while implementing changes to streamline. Consistently providing expert financial perspective and opinions in analysis.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES, INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Oversee Accounting Department
- Manages the daily and monthly processes of the department.
- Delegates authority, responsibilities, and tasks
- Develop and evaluate departmental procedures
- Maintain the General Ledger – Creating and closing accounts as needed
- Assist with internal/external audits
- Maintains accounting records and responsible for preparation of reports
- Manages departmental vendors
- Accounting Tasks
- Reviews journal entries for appropriateness and documentation.
- Perform complex balance sheet reconciliations
- Ensures all general ledger accounts assigned to staff are reconciled timely
- Manage the accounting for the investment portfolio
- Oversee the month end close process.
- Regulatory Reporting
- Tax Reporting for Federal, State and County
- 5300 Call Report
- US Census
- Provide support to staff as needed
- Mentor, train and lead department staff
- Serve as primary point of contact for staff regarding ACH/Draft/Wires
- Assist members directly as needed
- Provide support to Accounting, conducting account/general ledger research as appropriate
- Maintain working knowledge of various account software programs.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Credit Union.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
Requirements:POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience in accounting function, in a financial institution, in a Credit Union preferred.
- Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and credit union accounting systems.
- Familiarity with credit union/banking accounting regulations and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of balance sheet and income statement
- Strong computer proficiency required Microsoft Office (Excel and Word), accurate keyboard skills and familiarity with 10-key calculator.
- Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and have the ability to evaluate situations to determine the proper course of action
- Effective people skills, including excellent written and verbal communication skills, including active listening and providing clear direction
- Must be highly motivated, self-driven, detail oriented, well organized, ability to prioritize and multitask with strong attention to detail.
