Job description

About Us Burkland's core purpose is to Accelerate Dreams. So often, turning dreams into reality helps change the world. We thrive at the forefront of this transformation.

Startups desire our professionals โ€” they are the best in the business. Startups seek our content โ€” we are an industry thought leader. Startups trust our expertise, so founders can focus on their companies, products and value-add.

As a part of our demonstrated value, our clients raised over $3B just last year. At Burkland, we lead with our Core Purpose. We do this for both our clients and our employees.

We believe that leaning on our Core Values (Fresh Perspectives, Exponential Value, Empathy, Trusted Partner) will lead to happy clients and happy employees. We are a remote-first company with over 190 incredible team members, more than 800 clients, and a commitment to Accelerating Dreams. The Role We are seeking a technical accountant with a heavy technical background to work on projects with client teams of startups.

Ideal candidates have former Audit Manager experience from a regional or national firm or an equivalent background who want a strategic, "handsโ€on" advisory role. You will be a technical anchor for our clients, ensuring their financial statements are auditโ€ready, scalable, and investorโ€compliant. Your Typical, Atypical Day Technical Oversight & Financial Preparation Leverage your audit manager background to prepare monthly and annual GAAP financial statements and complex footnote disclosures that stand up to audit scrutiny.

Conduct technical review on complex, nonโ€routine accounting positions and significant client deliverables. Act as the internal technical expert, drafting and implementing accounting policies for startups (e.g., ASC606 for SaaS, ASC718 for stockโ€based comp, and capitalized software). Build and monitor internal control frameworks rightโ€sized for startupsโ€”balancing risk mitigation with the speed of a remote, fastโ€paced environment.

Define, document, and enforce the quality control framework for client deliverables, including review checklists, sampling methodologies, and standards for technical accounting documentation. Serve as a technical resource to internal client service teams, offering guidance, training, and documentation support on technical accounting standards and appropriate accounting. Manage the tracking for internal issues and significant review points identified by the QC function, ensuring timely and effective remediation efforts are in place.

Strategic Management Accounting Translate complex data into clear narratives for founders, focusing on cash flow management, unit economics, and "whatโ€if" scenario modeling. Design realโ€time tracking for SaaS or Eโ€commerce metrics (CAC, LTV, Churn) to drive dataโ€backed board decisions. Streamline the "closeโ€toโ€report" cycle using cloudโ€based tech stacks.

Remote Client Advisory Serve as the primary point of contact for founders, providing highโ€level oversight typically expected of a Controller or Audit Manager. Lead clients through their first institutional audits, managing the relationship with external firms to ensure a seamless process. About You 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.

Considered a plus if the experience includes several years as an Audit Manager at a regional or national firm. Exceptional command of U.S. GAAP and the ability to research and document complex technical positions independently.

CPA is preferred, given the emphasis on technical reporting and auditโ€readiness. Advanced proficiency in asynchronous communication (Slack & Karbon) and a selfโ€starting approach to managing multiple client deadlines. Core Competencies Expertโ€level knowledge of QuickBooks Online (QBO), Xero, or Sage Intacct.

Proficiency with Bill.com, Gusto, Rippling, and Expensify for automated AP/AR and payroll. Mastery of Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets (advanced formulas, Pivot Tables). Google Suite product experience is a plus.

Comfort navigating a 100% remote stack, including Slack, Zoom, Google, and project management tools like Karbon. Bonus Skills (Niceโ€toโ€Have, Not Required) Experience supporting highโ€growth startups in SaaS, FinTech, Biotech/Life Sciences, or Web3/Crypto. Exposure to SeriesA/B due diligence or preparing financial materials for investor presentations.

Familiarity with R&D tax credits and multiโ€state nexus considerations for remote teams. Experience transitioning companies from spreadsheets to integrated ERP systems. What We Offer Flexible work schedule to promote a healthy workโ€life balance.

Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance for you and your dependents. Short & Long Term Disability Insurance to support you when you need it the most. Flexible PTO โ€“ Take time off from work when you need it.

401(k) with a company match to ensure you are ready for retirement. A generous home office expense reimbursement so you have the office you need to be productive. Forget the commute!

We're a remoteโ€first workplace, so you can work from your home office or from the beach, if you'd like! We offer a collaborative, communicative culture, driven by our Core Purpose + Values. We work with incredibly smart people who love to learn and share what they know.

If this sounds like a team you'd like to be a part of, we'd love to hear from you. EEO Statement Burkland Associates is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records. The base pay range target for the role described in this job description is $130,000 โ€“ $145,000.
