ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND/CULTURE

The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) is a private non-profit organization leading the economic revitalization efforts for Detroit, the most exciting urban recovery in the country. The DEGC works closely with the City of Detroit and other partners to support existing businesses and bring new companies and investments to the City. The DEGC designs and implements innovative solutions that drive investment, create jobs, and build the economy through strong public-private collaborations. The DEGC’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and professionalism permeates the organization and undergirds our stature as the economic development authority for the City.

The DEGC provides staff services to Detroit’s public development authorities including The Downtown Development Authority, The Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, The Economic Development Corporation, The Eight Mile Woodward Corridor Improvement Authority, Neighborhood Development Corporation, the Local Development Finance Authority, and the Tax Increment Finance Authority. DEGC’s Board Administration Team provides administrative services and board engagement to each of these authorities

SUMMARY OF ROLE

We seek a dynamic, skilled, professional self-starter to fill an open role as the Board Administration Associate. This role will assist in managing the day-to-day aspects of the public authorities overseen by our organization. The Board Administration Associate should be energetic, conscientious, and passionate, strongly interested in making a difference. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented while seeing and being aware of the big picture. The person in this role needs to be able to navigate in an environment that has strict regulations and guidelines but is also surrounded by a certain amount of ambiguity.

The ideal candidate should appreciate the value of and be able to work with a talented and diverse team of professionals; and have the mental/intellectual flexibility, creativity, and resiliency to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Given that the work is always balanced between people and action, the ideal candidate must have a strong orientation toward customer service while tenaciously managing tasks and deadlines with integrity.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide notice of public authority meetings and hearings with appropriate support documentation as required by law.
  • Collect information from the various DEGC departments and corporation counsel to prepare agendas, reports, and information about Board actions before meetings.
  • Review all memoranda, resolutions, and attached supplemental information for consistency and conformance with standard practice.
  • Compile, proofread, and finalize board meeting materials using electronic board software and web-based applications.
  • Distribution of agendas and related information to board members and interested parties.
  • Attend all board meetings and record all key decisions and discussion items. Occasionally these meetings could be held in the evening.
  • Transcribe and prepare board meeting minutes.
  • Maintaining electronic and backup files for board meeting minutes, resolution files, and other records.
  • Update board webpages with notices, cancellations, meeting minutes, and board documents.
  • Assist the DEGC Vice President in the timely appointment of Authority board members.
  • Maintain updated and historical board member lists. Update the lists on the DEGC website as needed.
  • Assist with board administration staff meeting schedules and correspondence with City and State partners.
  • Ability to maintain high discretion while managing highly sensitive and confidential information.
  • Provide clerical and project support to the Board Administration team as needed.
  • Provides staff support at community meetings and events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • 2-5 years of experience in an administrative support role. Preferably at a law firm, as a paralegal, or strictly regulated field.
  • A four-year degree in business, economics, public administration, urban planning, or a related field is a plus.
  • Knowledge of research and analytic techniques. Principles and practices of economic development are a plus.
  • Knowledge of Robert’s Rules of Order is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 environment (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Familiarity with data management systems, such as Salesforce, and Smart Sheet, is a plus.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects of varying degrees of complexity.
  • Ability to work with confidential documents.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and achieve deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Professionalism and a positive service attitude at all times.
  • Strong listener and learner with the ability to adapt and innovate when facing adversity.

COVID-19 INFORMATION:

DEGC is currently operating on a Hybrid schedule. Candidates should be aware that all employees must do in-person work at least twice a week. This in-person work includes but is not limited to reporting to the DEGC office, community engagement, and in-person meetings. DEGC reserves the right to terminate the Hybrid work schedule for any individual employee or for all employees at any time, in its sole discretion.

Candidates must show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Reasonable accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis for exemptions to this requirement in accordance with applicable law. However, applicants should be aware that for external-facing roles, accommodations that involve remaining unvaccinated against COVID-19 may not be deemed reasonable and may be denied. COMPENSATION:

A competitive compensation package will be provided to the successful candidates. The salary range depends on experience and is accompanied by a full range of benefits.
