Veilbreaker Skybridge Supervisor

This job is in Girdwood, Alaska. The Veilbreaker Skybridge Supervisor coordinates the Veilbreaker operations for daily hikes to the skybridge venue. The Veilbreaker Skybridges are Alyeska’s newest summer attraction in its second season, spanning over 600’ across Christmas and New Year’s Chutes, offering guests (and guides) stunning views of the Chugach Mountains, Turnagain Arm and surrounding glaciers. The Skybridge venue is high off the ground, supervisors must possess fundamental high rope skills, guiding skills, first aid & CPR as well as coaching guides on guest service & people skills.

Responsibilities

  • Must work well in a team environment.
  • Able to work successfully with a variety of audiences, general public, parents, children and peers.
  • Demonstrate Excellent communication skills, good judgment, facilitation and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced team environment as well as independently.
  • Schedule guides for group hiking and Skybridge crossings for guests of all ability and fitness levels over steep and rugged terrain.
  • Have strong communication skills to collaborate with Ski Patrol, Ticket Office, Black Diamond Club, Tram Operations and Mountain Concierge.
  • Organized and creative, with a commitment to build a thriving team.
  • Conduct guide interviews and hire for the season.
  • Conduct Guide Training in collaboration with Ski Patrol.
  • Develop budget for labor and expenses with the Mountain General Manager for the season.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a mountain 4x4 style side-by-side vehicle on a mountain road.
  • Promote a culture of safety for guests and team members.
  • Promote best practices in avoiding and/or encountering wildlife with Guides.
  • Develop best practices and use for the climbing gear, including harnesses, safety tethers and helmets.
  • Previous guiding experience in outdoor education a must.
  • Maintain a clean guest meeting area, including storage and care of safety gear
  • Develop stories with the guides about local geography, history, able to learn fun facts about Alaska and Girdwood, along with general flora and fauna to share with guests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Mountain General Manager

  • High ropes, harness, climbing, hiking, guiding skills are a must.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a 4x4 side-by-side vehicle on an uneven and steep mountain road.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Successful completion of Alyeska Resort Rock and Rappel Training
  • Able to hike for extended periods of time, requiring lifting, bending and twisting
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to use radio communications and take directions
  • EMT, WFR, BLS is preferred

  • Physical demands: guides must be physically able to safely navigate all in-bounds areas in all weather and trail conditions. You will be required to hike and talk for extended periods of time. Lifting heavy objects (no more than 50 pounds), bending, twisting and shoveling may be required. You will be required to stand, hike, and climb/rappel safely on uneven terrain. Employee may be required to pass a functional capacity test developed for this job.
  • Work Environment: the noise in this work environment is usually moderate. Physical terrain in the work environment can be uneven with poor traction; there is mud, rock, and gravel outside and wet floors indoors. Outside temperatures can be cold and wet.
