Job Description

The National Association of Counties (NACo), representing America’s 3,069 county governments with 40,000 elected officials, 3.6 million county employees and more than $660 billion in annual community-based investments, seeks a Senior Accountant.

Under the direction of the Controller, this position performs supervisory work involving day to day supervision of accounting technicians. Ensures proper maintenance and recording of all A/R and A/P financial data. Prepares journal entries and reviews accounting classifications assigned to various records.

Objectives of this role:

  • Be impeccable steward of the association’s assets
  • Achieve optimal financial health and performance across the association through a ONE NACo mindset

Position Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Compute and record annual deferred benefits for employee and employer match contributions as part of 401k audit
  • Review and reconcile monthly investment portfolio
  • Review bi-weekly payroll and upload reconciled payroll entries in accounting system
  • Cross check automated debit by payroll company
  • Reconcile 401k contribution and transfers
  • Reconcile and record Fixed Assets and work in progress reconciliation
  • Review and manage monthly checklist of financial tasks for Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable
  • Prepare and record monthly journal entries for close- includes recurring and nonrecurring Journal entries each month.
  • Monitor bank transaction for 7 banks- making sure these are recorded correctly by entity/company.
  • Record automated payments in system.
  • Assist with sub tenant’s billings/ copier reports/postage reports.
  • Assist other staff with workload-Concur (credit card and staff Reimbusments) and D365(Deposit for event and conference registration and Membership dues).
  • Assist with annual audit-pull backup, prepare audit recons.
  • Working knowledge of leases and sub leases as per ASC 842 rulings.
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, accounting or related field
  • Advance Excel formulas and large volume of data analysis
  • Knowledge of GAAP and FASB rules for audit and compliance
  • Knowledge of IRS rules for payroll
  • Proficient with accounting software and experience with a software system implementation
  • Excellent computer skills; experience in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work closely with senior management, as well as mentor/lead other team members
  • Outstanding analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid work schedule is available, with minimum requirement of 3 days in the office to collaborate
  • Occasional travel is required for attendance at NACo conferences
