I. Position Overview:

The position is responsible for developing, implementing and continually improving company Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) programs in a manner that reduces risk, prevents incidents and complies with external regulatory requirements to provide an environment that is safe and secure for employees, visitors and contractors.

II. Specific Duties, Activities, and Responsibilities:

  • Guide and promote employee health and safety performance by developing health and safety systems, policies and procedures, campaigns and programs to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses, and enhance the overall site safety culture resulting in management engagement, employee involvement and the reduction in unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Provide technical consultation that includes assessment and management of EH&S issues and risks arising from operations, to prevent incidents, protect company assets and business affairs. Inspect, assess, monitor, investigate and/or recommend corrective and preventative actions, conduct trend analysis, document compliance with standards, design programs and implement; accountable for incident handling and reporting of EH&S issues.
  • Manages and develops the EHS&S team of personnel
  • Assist and guide internal and external customers with regards to Environmental, Health, Safety And Security issues, including special projects, new products, and complaints or concerns.
  • Conduct assessments, inventories and inspections for various environmental, safety and security regulations. These include:
    1. Job Hazard Assessments
    2. Accident Investigations
    3. Hazard control and Prevention Reports
    4. Tracking and verification of corrective actions
    5. Audits to the Environmental, Health and Safety programs
  • Advances the EHS&S objectives and achievement of results through the engagement of appropriate stakeholders throughout the organization including the management and direction of the site safety committees.
  • Maintains and improves captive shoe program including tracking of reimbursement eligibility.
  • Ensure that complaints, incidents, compliance deviations and enforcement actions are fully investigated and work with other departments to ensure corrective and preventative measures are taken.
  • Establish, maintain, and continually improve a process where employees can communicate EHS&S related questions and concerns
  • Implement and continuously improve loss control programs such as emergency response, business continuity, crisis management planning, access control and building/life safety consulting other leaders as appropriate.
  • Serve as site specific EHS&S compliance program owner to interpret EHS&S regulations and develop standards, procedures and programs that include, but is not limited to safety, ergonomic and industrial hygiene.
  • Perform facility audits, surveys and inspections to identify environmental, security and occupational hazards and weaknesses, to promote effective practices and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and develop recommendations that provide solutions, remedies or process improvement.
  • Oversee the Potent Compound Program to ensure Industrial Hygiene Assessments are conducted, employees are trained and appropriate engineering controls are placed to ensure employee health and safety. In addition, supervise medical surveillance for potent compounds, respiratory protection and hearing conservation programs and employee exposure monitoring.
  • Adhere and maintain 100% compliance with federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare, submit (as appropriate, by law) and document all Homeland Security, EPA and OSHA requirements up to but not limited to Monthly Cargo Reporting, Quarterly/Annual Assessments, OSHA 300 log, CAA, CWA, RCRA, storm water / waste water, and SARA 311, 312, 313.
  • Oversee all chemical and hazardous waste management, including transportation.
  • Develop and implement training for all personnel to assure understanding and compliance of EHS&S programs and environmental permit conditions.
  • Interact, report and provide company representation to regulatory bodies relating to particular aspects of EHS&S affairs, compliance matters, enforcement actions, remedial activities and regulatory affairs. Interfacing with external professional services, customers, regulators, industry and represent company at public meetings, hearings and perform public relations duties.
  • Represent company externally as EHS&S subject matter expert and in benchmarking activities.
  • Develop and oversee EHS&S budget.
  • Administer and manage the Workers’ Compensation and Random Drug Testing programs including individual case management where appropriate.
  • Maintain effectiveness of the Quality System components relevant to this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

III. Position Requirements:

Education or Equivalent:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Safety, Environmental Engineering or other relevant discipline, or a minimum of 10 years of directly relevant experience

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years EH&S experience in a manufacturing environment is required
  • 5+ years in an EH&S leadership/management role is preferred
  • Experience with EPA or similar government or regulatory agency a plus
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or manufacturing industry a plus

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • Thoroughly understand regulatory requirements, including TSA, OSHA and EPA compliance standards, that include regulations related to storm water / wastewater, RCRA, CAA, CWA, air emissions reporting and other EH&S-related federal, state and local laws that apply to the business.
  • Experience in risk assessments, risk management, ergonomics, personnel protective equipment, industrial safety, injury and incident investigation, reporting, industrial hygiene, auditing, and training.
  • Successful track record of designing and managing employee safety, workers’ compensation and drug testing programs
  • Must possess and demonstrate the ability to build cohesive, highly motivated teams, direct individuals and delegate responsibilities and tasks.
  • Must be dependable and show initiative to improve the overall throughput and financial goals of the organization.
  • Must possess and demonstrate excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications and presentation skills.
  • Must possess excellent problem solving, analytical, influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with a variety of individuals at all levels within the organization and with outside agencies.
  • Must be well-organized and detail-oriented.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement process and program improvements.
  • Possess the ability to create and develop long term strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in managing a team, as well as engaging others through committees, champions, projects, etc. to achieve targeted results.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak clear English.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for up to 8 hours per day
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reading of written documents and use of computer monitor screen, talking, writing, listening
  • Occasional climbing ladders/steps, walking up inclines and uneven terrain, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, bending, handling, turning, balancing, carrying, grasping
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 30 pounds
  • Approximately 15% vehicle and/or airline travel
