Game Designer

Job Title: Technical Game Designer

Company: Spellbrush

Location: San Francisco / Remote

The Role:

Spellbrush, the world’s leading generative AI studio behind niji・journey, is looking for a Game Designer to bring our mobile turn-based tactics game to life with distinctive flair! If you love games like Fire Emblem and Unicorn Overlords, hit us up!

What you’ll do:
  • Interpret design directions from game director to prototype, refine, and maintain new gameplay mechanics and systems implementing generative AI and unconventional approaches to 2D turn-based tactics games.

  • Collaborate with game director and developers to implement player-centric features across the entire game

  • Create and tune gameplay features related to battle tactics, relationship building, rewards paths, and more through production, launch, and post-launch.

You might be a great fit if:
  • You juggle, gut-check, and perfectly integrate multiple game mechanics.
We’re looking for someone with ideally 4+ years of game design experience, which ideally includes live-ops, and/or turn-based tactics mobile game design experience. As the first studio utilizing Generative AI in conjunction with other new tactics mechanics, we need designers who can ensure all the pieces fall into place.

  • Tactics and strategy innovations make your heart sing.
At its core, our game is a next-level tactics entry wrapped in layers of lovingly designed anime character interactions and the introduction of generative AI mechanics. Therefore, the legitimacy, design tightness, and fun factor of the core tactics gameplay must be indisputable, as well as your passion and familiarity with this game style.

  • You’ve got end-to-end experience under your belt.
Typically, this looks like shipping your own indie game or being a lead designer on a game team. While we’re open to designers of various backgrounds, it’s imperative that you’ve designed all aspects of a game in a nonzero capacity.

  • You have implemented untested and unconventional gameplay mechanics.
Our goal is not to produce a clone of anything – as an anime game studio with an extremely advanced in-house generative AI research team, our mission is to enhance gameplay with cutting edge technology. While our directors will concept never-before-played ideas, we will rely on you to prototype, refine, and ultimately bring trailblazing gameplay features into reality.

  • You deeply understand the importance of gameplay balance, playability, and longevity.
We’re excited to invent new game verticals, and our focus remains on the delight and enrichment of our players. With both love for and expertise in tactics, character interactions, UX features, and other game facets, you will advocate for moments and experiences that allow our characters and world to shine and captivate players.

  • The anime aesthetic resonates with you.
It's no secret – we're huge anime enthusiasts. A deep understanding of audiences who enjoy anime, mobile gacha games, and turn-based tactics games is critical to build the optimal designs for our audiences.

  • You're comfortable working on small, fast-paced, on-site teams
Working here will feel very much like a small indie studio: close-knit, with high ownership and flexibility. We’re also an in-person studio. Our games team is at our office in downtown San Francisco, CA, 3-4x a week!

  • And you're excited about the potential of Generative AI.
You'll also be working closely with some of the best AI researchers in the world: we develop all our own in-house models. You won’t be using Generative AI simply as a vehicle for producing cheap assets. (We simply don’t believe that is an effective workflow). You’ll be working with the research team to explore the frontier of what is possible at the intersection of machine learning, art, and games.

The maximum base salary range for this position is $80,000 - $160,000, with a target base salary range of $90,000-$130,000. The final base salary is dependent upon location, experience, fit, and other factors. In addition, we offer a generous compensation package that includes equity, top-tier employer-sponsored health, dental, and vision insurance, and additional perks!

At Spellbrush, we value creativity, collaboration, and innovation. If you're excited about working with cutting-edge technology and passionate about anime, gaming, and design, we'd love to hear from you. Apply now to join our team as a Game UI / UX Designer!

To apply - please share your previous work experience/resume, portfolio, and any links to previous relevant works and the name of the best waifu or husbando in your message!
