Job Title: Ahtna Language Intern
Department: Language & Culture

Reports to: Ahtna Language Specialist


Position Summary: The Ahtna Language Specialist is responsible for supporting the Ahtna Language Specialist in performing Ahtna language research to set up the Murkutu online site and to set up the Ahtna language learning modules on the 7000 languages site for future use by Tribal citizens and the public. This position is also responsible for weekly learning of the Ahtna language. Additionally this position assists with documenting language proficiency and lessons learned through reports, photos, videos and provide data to the Ahtna Language Specialist. This is a part-time non benefitted, 16-25 hour per week position.


Here’s What you Can Expect in a Typical Day: You will work daily to support the Ahtna Language Specialist in compiling video and recorded information for uploading onto the Mukurtu and 7000 languages website. You will assist the Specialist in compiling lesson materials to be utilized in the TPR guide for working with the staff at 7000 languages to set up individual learning modules. Once the sites are set up, you will support the Specialist in maintaining and adding new materials. You will work with the Specialist to coordinate with other Ahtna language experts to ensure that the web platform projects meet the goals of furthering Ahtna language learning. You will plan with the Specialist for weekly Ahtna language lessons at YNDA School using the existing TPR curriculum. You will support the Specialist in planning and performing Ahtna language assessments for determining learning achieved. You will participate in cultural activities and incorporate Ahtna language activities into the lessons.


Here’s What We’re Looking For:
• No experience is required. Some high school is required.
• Someone who is willing and capable of learning Ahtna language using the Traditional Physical Response (TPR) method and share Ahtna language, culture, stories, and history.
• Someone who is proficient with computers, and willing to learn media archival technology and editing software.
• Someone who is dependable with great time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
• Someone who can provide clear communication with co-workers, supervisor, and caregivers.
• Must have reliable transportation to get to and from the school located at 9109 N Glenn Highway in Palmer.


Physical Requirements
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or working on a computer and standing or moving for long periods of time.
• Must be able to lift at least 20 – 30 pounds at a time.


Drug Testing:
• This position is subject to pre-hire and random drug testing.


Background Check:
• This position requires you to complete a state and federal pre-employment background check. A background check is required annually as a condition of employment for this position.
