Position Overview
The Payroll Accountant works under the general direction of the Controller and is responsible for the preparation of wage and salary payroll. The Payroll Accountant deals with complex and non-routine tasks and situations requiring initiative and judgment. This position is responsible for maintaining individual payroll records and preparation of special analyses and payroll reports for management. The Payroll Accountant also makes recommendations for procedural changes and system upgrades.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of the bi-weekly payroll transmittal
- Responsible for maintaining necessary employee and departmental files.
- Perform payroll accounting, prepare payroll journal entries.
- Process W4 changes, PTO, and leave of absences for employees.
- Ensure that payroll processing is in compliance with federal, state and local laws.
- Address payroll inquiries from employees in a timely manner.
- Preparation of manual checks as needed.
- Generate periodic payroll reports to managers for review.
- Assists auditors for the purpose of providing supporting documentation and/or information on year-end financial, 401K and WC audits.
- Performs account reconciliation and analysis while ensuring supporting documentation is accurate.
- Evaluate and implement appropriate payroll policies and payroll process.
- Completion of special projects as needed.
- Review AP invoices and other accounting tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- 4-6 years payroll experience with a mid-size employer
- Knowledge of payroll tax law and application
- Experience in multi-state payroll and payroll taxes (state and local)
- Experience and knowledge in handling of payroll related benefits (e.g. 401K, Sec 125 medical, group term life, jury and military duty, disability etc.)
- Experience in payroll related journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations.
- Experience in preparation of payroll management reports.
- 2+ years' experience in ADP for Windows
- Experience in ADP ReportSmith report-writer.
- Experience in preparing Excel worksheets.
- Proven leadership skills
