Job Description

 

SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Administrator/Program Director, the Director of Nursing Services shall be responsible for the direction, provision, and quality of nursing services provided for all participants.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Director of Nursing Services shall be a registered professional nurse licensed in the State of New Jersey, who has at least one year full-time, or full-time equivalent, experience in nursing supervision and/or nursing administration in a licensed health care facility. Must possess leadership characteristics evidenced by understanding the needs of the elderly, being sensitive to the needs of the Families and caregivers, demonstrating good communication skills, providing advice and presenting solutions with other departments to provide quality care to the participants. Must hold a registered nursing license in the State of New Jersey in good standing. Is responsible for delivering direct care to and providing a therapeutic environment for the residents in coordination with the Licensed Nursing Staff. Is able to deliver direct care to residents of Good Shepherd Adult Medical Day Care in accordance with established Good Shepherd Adult Medical Day Care routines, methods and techniques.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES:

- Develop and implement written objectives, a nursing philosophy, policies a procedure manual, an organizational plan, a master staffing plan and an assessment protocol for the assessment of the health service needs of all participants and a quality assurance program for the nursing service.

- Coordinate and integrate the nursing service with other participant care services to provide a continuum of care for the participants.

- Assist in the development and maintenance of written job descriptions for nursing and ancillary personnel, and assignment of duties based upon education, training, competencies and job descriptions.

- Ensure that nursing services are provided to the participants as specified in the nursing care plan, which shall be initiated upon the participant’s admission, and that nursing personnel are assigned to participants in accordance with the facility’s participant care policies and procedures for determining staffing levels on the basis of an assessment of the acuity of participant need.

- Participates in staff education activities and provides consultation to facility personnel.

- Conducts quarterly care planning conferences for each participant enrolled.

- Reports to the Administrator any inadequacies in participant care.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

• Provide nursing care based upon physician’s orders and daily assessment of each participant’s health status.

• Develop and review the nursing portion of the participant care plan upon admission and quarterly thereafter.

• Provide observation, monitoring and intervention for unstable medical conditions.

• Provide liaison with the participant’s attending physician and consulting physicians, notifying them of any changes in the health status of the participant.

• Take daily attendance and record daily statistical data as required.

• Communicate with the family/caregiver/participant representative regarding problems related to care of the participant at the center or at home ranging from changes in the participant’s condition or physician’s orders to concerns regarding the participant’s hygiene or dietary/fluid intake.

• Properly and safely lift, move, transfer and position residents in chair, wheelchairs, etc.

• Provide health education and counseling regarding the participant to family/participant representative.

• Administer, or supervise, as prescribed by the participant’s attending physician, the pharmaceutical regime for each participant, document same and observe for adverse reactions.

• Provide emergency care including notification of ambulance, physician, emergency care facility and participant’s emergency contact.

• Supervise the provision of meals and the participant’s dietary and fluid intake.

• Coordinate the provision of other health services provided within and outside of the center.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work requires frequent sitting, reaching and pulling, crouching

Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must be able to move about sufficiently to respond to life threatening emergencies including performing CPR and assisting with the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

**Bilingual in Spanish is a Plus.**
