Key responsibilities
A Pediatric Hospitalist plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive medical care to pediatric patients within a hospital setting. They work closely with other healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat a variety of illnesses and injuries in children, ensuring that young patients receive high-quality, compassionate care.

- Provide direct patient care in the hospital setting, including admissions, consultations, and discharges
- Conduct thorough examinations and assessments of pediatric patients to determine a diagnosis and develop treatment plans
- Coordinate care with specialists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare providers to ensure integrated and holistic treatment for patients
- Manage the medical care of pediatric inpatients, including ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and monitoring progress
- Oversee and participate in medical procedures and interventions for pediatric patients as necessary
- Document patient care activities, including writing admission and progress notes, and maintaining accurate medical records
- Provide education and support to patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and preventive care
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and collaborate with nursing staff, therapists, and other allied healthcare professionals
- Stay updated on the latest developments in pediatric medicine through ongoing education, training, and participation in professional development activities
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and adhere to best practices in pediatric hospital medicine
- Act as a resource for healthcare team members regarding pediatric-specific medical expertise and guidance
- Adhere to hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including ethical guidelines and standards of care
- Participate in on-call rotations and provide after-hours coverage as required
- Collaborate with hospital leadership and participate in committees, task forces, and other hospital governance activities
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school
- Completion of a pediatric residency program and board certification in pediatrics
- Licensure to practice medicine in the state or region of employment, with current DEA registration
- Proven experience in pediatric hospital medicine, including managing inpatient care and conducting consultations
- Demonstrated clinical expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of pediatric conditions, from common illnesses to complex medical issues
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey medical information to patients, families, and colleagues
- Strong teamwork and collaboration capabilities, with a commitment to interdisciplinary care and shared decision-making
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining a focus on patient safety and quality outcomes
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development, including staying abreast of advances in pediatric medicine and hospitalist practices
- Understanding of and adherence to ethical standards, patient confidentiality, and regulatory requirements in healthcare
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage competing demands effectively
- Capacity for empathy and compassion in working with pediatric patients and their families, particularly during challenging medical situations
- Willingness to engage in teaching, mentoring, and scholarly activities as part of academic hospitalist responsibilities, if applicable
- Ability to adapt to evolving healthcare policies, technologies, and best practices, and contribute to strategic initiatives for pediatric hospital medicine
- Current certification or eligibility for certification in pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and basic life support (BLS)
