Job Description

We are seeking a Bioinformatician for a multi-year contract supporting the Coronavirus and Respiratory Viruses Laboratory Branch (CRVLB) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention located in Atlanta, GA.  Candidates for this position can be remote, with a high preference for candidates in the Southeast.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The professional for this role needs to be well versed in processing raw sequence data produced by Sanger and NGS methods as well as identify, characterize, and annotate genes found in sequence data.  In addition, they will perform evolutionary and phylogenetic studies of sequence data, identify unique regions of pathogen genomes for use as targets in molecular diagnostic assays and design oligonucleotide primers/probes for use in sequencing projects and pathogen detection assays. 

 

This professional will provide technical assistance on a variety of tasks and assignments related to genomic lab-epidemiologic studies on the evolution of viruses.  They will leverage their analytical and interpretive skills to analyze NGS data from routine and enhanced global surveillance using spatiotemporal, phylodynamic, and epidemiologic approaches to determine trends that can be used in making decisions about prevention, treatment and control of epidemics or pandemics. 

 

They will conduct genomic lab and epidemiologic studies and use mathematical and computational approaches to understand the evolutionary and epidemiological patterns of viruses.  They will ensure the appropriate genomic analysis methods, procedures, techniques, and applicable quality controls are correctly conducted by referring to standard protocols.  Lastly, they will prepare reports, summaries, presentations, papers, and other documents to highlight findings, and present them to team members and colleagues as needed.

 

 

Candidate Qualifications:

The professional for this role will have at a minimum a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics or another scientific field such as, Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Biology, Microbiology with at least 4 years of professional experience developing and testing next generation sequencing data using the latest software and techniques. 

 

They will be well versed in establishing bioinformatics algorithms and integrate multiple levels of biological information with genomic data to surveil and report on anomalies.  They will have demonstrated knowledge and skills performing conducting the scientific testing as outlined above and be experienced in communicating complex scientific information (both written and verbally) to a wide audience.
