TITLE: Youth Development Professional II (YDP II)

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Boys & Girls Club of Garfield is committed to inspiring and enabling all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The Youth Development Professional II (YDP II) plays a crucial role in achieving this mission through leading engaging activities and programs during our Summer Camp and continuing with our afterschool program during the school year.
ROLE PURPOSE: The YDP II is the primary facilitator of our Daily Challenges curriculum, which is designed to build movement skills and foster positive attitudes toward physical activity. This role involves running programs that include games, cooperative activities, and sports to develop a young person’s ability, confidence, and motivation to be physically active.
SUMMER CAMP RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan, lead, and implement high-quality programming for our club members during the summer camp.
- Supervise club members to ensure their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being.
- Facilitate and create lesson plans for daily activities as assigned.
- Organize and lead various small and large group activities.
- Ensure the organization and cleanliness of the facilities.
AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Continue to engage children in high-yield recreational activities and educational experiences after school hours.
- Support homework help sessions and lead enrichment activities that complement our curriculum.
- Maintain a positive and stimulating environment for learning and growth.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in all staff training and meetings.
- Set a good example for children and peers, including maintaining cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up responsibilities, and exhibiting sportsmanship.
- Manage and empty trash and recycling bins as needed.
- Work collaboratively with volunteers and Counselors in Training.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- Afterschool Program: Monday to Friday, 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
- Summer Program: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Schedules are created based on a 40-hour workweek commitment.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of safety guidelines as established by the organization.
- Strong time-management and multitasking abilities.
- Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors and in varied settings.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Availability to work the entire camp season (9 weeks) and continue through the school year in the afterschool program with minimal interruptions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and actively engage with youth in a physically demanding environment.
- Previous experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field is highly beneficial.
- Preferred certifications: First Aid, AED, BLS/CPR.
