The SARA EMP Survivability and Effects Department within the High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a talented, motivated, and experienced Applied EM Scientist (Engineer/Physicist) to formulate methodologies and apply advanced test techniques to High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) assessment and hardening activities. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.
The Applied EM Scientist will be the technical lead of a diverse, highly skilled group. In this position, the candidate will be responsible for proper application of MIL-STD-3023 (aircraft hardening) and MIL-STD-188-125-1A (fixed ground-based facility hardening) from modeling/simulation/analyses, to test planning, to test conduct and to posttest analysis.
Core Responsibilities:
- To develop into a nationally recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) in application of MIL-STD-3023 to aircraft HEMP hardening and/or MIL-STD-188-125-1A to fixed ground-based facility HEMP hardening
- Perform research, design, development, fabrication, testing, and documentation of multidisciplinary engineering tasks on multiple projects and programs
- Provide technical solutions to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive issues problems where the solution path is not known ahead of time
- Serve as technical and or programmatic contact for customer meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee reviews
- Write detailed technical reports and proposals
- May sit in on interviews of new talent
- Moderate to significant travel required (up to 20% a year)
Requirements:
- 10+ years’ experience with a minimum of MS in Applied Electromagnetics, Physics, Electrical Engineer, or Aerospace Engineering with working knowledge of EMI/EMC, Electromagnetic Environment Effects (E3), lightning, High Powered Microwave (HPM), or HEMP engineering.
- 5+ years’ experience with team leadership and collaboration with demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, delegate, problem-solve strategically, and motivate empathetically
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Working knowledge of system level EM testing and signal processing
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD security clearance
- US Citizenship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience in application of MIL-STD-3023 and/or MIL-STD-188-125-1A
- Direct experience with High Level EMP simulators at NAVAIR’s Patuxent River Test Site
- Working knowledge of EM simulation and modeling techniques
- Working knowledge of Continuous Wave Immersion (CWI) or other CW test techniques
- Working knowledge of EMP extrapolation techniques
- Experience interfacing with customers to define specific program requirements
- Active Top Secret Security Clearance

Salary Range: $150,000 - $200,000 (DOE)
