THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION (NOT BENEFIT ELIGIBLE) LASTING APPROXIMATELY 4 MONTHS - STARTS IMMEDIATELY

MUST BE ABLE TO PHYSICALLY BE IN THE OFFICE THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH FOR PRODUCTION. REMAINDER OF THE MONTH CAN BE REMOTE.

Nature of the Position

The managing editor is responsible for overseeing production, including managing traffic at every stage, from pitches to print, for the monthly production of Landscape Architecture Magazine (LAM), the monthly magazine of the American Society of Landscape Architects, including its print and online operations and special projects. Plans, coordinates, and facilitates editorial activities and staff engaged in selecting and preparing material for print and electronic publication by performing the following duties:

Responsibilities

Production of the magazine: Participates in the selection of freelance magazine contributors and assists with monitoring obligations to ensure contract fulfillment. Generates assignments to authors based on editorial staff decisions. Keeps a log of assignments, deadlines, and fees, and checks in with writers to keep submissions on track. Manages the tracking software for production including logging and responding to pitches. Creates a production schedule for each issue and tracks the status of each section of the magazine. Tracks all the elements for each assigned article (copy, art, credits, captions, etc.). Determines, with content editors, the required elements of each story and retrieves them or closely tracks their retrieval. Manages the flow of stories and art among authors, photographers, story editors, copy chief, and art director to create visually stunning imagery and captivating narratives. Seeks opportunities to improve efficiency and quality and increase the magazine’s value to membership.

Business of the magazine: Oversees the budget, contracts, assignments, and invoicing process of the magazine. Issues assignment sheets and contracts to authors, answers questions and assures that quality standards are met. Takes the first receipt of articles filed by authors, reads and evaluates material submitted for publication consideration, with the editor. Receives and processes invoices from contributors, sets and monitors the monthly and annual editorial budget. Holds monthly meetings with the team to review the editorial budget. Manages requests for photography rights, reprint permissions, and requests for print or digital articles. Prepares and submits awards program entries and coordinates with the marketing team. Represents the magazine at the annual conference and other events.

Editorial and writing: Copy-edits and fact-checks articles as assigned, including pieces assigned for LAM online. Writes pieces for print or online as assigned. Attends monthly ASLA Manager’s Meeting. Contributes ideas, meets with members, and seeks out content for issues. Manages correspondence, software platform, and monthly phone meetings of the LAM Editorial Advisory Committee.

Qualifications

Education: BA degree

Skills: Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Strong aptitude for project and process management with demonstrated success managing publications production process, including coordinating work of contributors. Meticulous attention to detail. A combination of speed and accuracy. A sense of enterprise and initiative. A nose for what is not working in any of a variety of situations and a sense of how to fix it. Excellent organizational skills, good judgment, and an ability to balance a heavy workload of short- and long-term project deadlines and address changing priorities throughout a fast-paced production process. A talent for working well under pressure. Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign fluency.

Experience: Minimum two years’ experience in editorial production management. Professional experience/knowledge of landscape architecture, design, planning, or environmental issues a plus.
