Director of Engineering – Remote (Arizona preferred)

This position can be based anywhere in the US, Arizona preferred, and must be willing to work West Coast hours.

We are seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead our talented team of software engineers and developers and own the SDLC process.  



Position Responsibilities:

As the Director of Engineering at Exact Payments, you will play a pivotal role in driving the technical direction of our platform and leading a team of 9 software engineers/developers. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deploy scalable and robust solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients in the payments facilitation space.


Leadership: Provide visionary leadership to the engineering team, fostering a culture of embracing Agile and its cadence, accountability, collaboration, and excellence. Set clear goals and expectations, and mentor team members to achieve their full potential. Manage and allocate resources effectively.  Maintain a customer focus (e.g. ask: what would our customer do?)

Technical Strategy: Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for our technology stack, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry best practices. Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends in the fintech space to drive continuous improvement and innovation. Must meet sprint goals.


Team Management: Recruit, onboard, and retain top engineering talent. Manage team performance, conduct regular performance evaluations, and provide constructive feedback to foster professional growth and development.

Project Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of engineering projects within defined timelines and budget constraints. Collaborate with product management and other stakeholders to prioritize initiatives and allocate resources effectively. Own the release process.


Architecture and Design: Lead architectural discussions and decisions, driving the design of scalable, reliable, and high-performance software solutions. Ensure adherence to coding standards, best practices, and quality assurance processes.

Collaboration: Foster strong cross-functional partnerships with product management, design, quality assurance, and other teams to deliver integrated and cohesive solutions. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to gather requirements, provide updates, and address technical challenges. Ensure proactive communications between Dev and DevOps teams, design and deliver a plan for regular read-outs.


Risk Management: Identify potential risks and dependencies early in the development lifecycle, and proactively implement mitigation strategies to ensure project success and minimize disruption to business operations.


Position Requirements:

Must have experience working in an early-stage tech company, where both strategic leadership and tactical execution are part of the job.  Must like to build and rally a team.

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Proven experience (10+ years) in a leadership role overseeing software engineering teams, preferably in an early-stage company in fintech or payments-related industry.

Deep technical expertise in software development, architecture, and design, with proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript, or Typescript.  Proven scrum practitioner – Agile (SM, CSP, Safe)

Strong understanding of cloud computing technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and modern software development practices (e.g., Agile, DevOps, CI/CD). Cloud Solutions Architecture Certification is a plus.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Problem-solver.  Translator from product language to engineering language (alignment).

Demonstrated track record of successfully delivering large-scale software projects on time and within budget.  Ruthless prioritizer.  Establish and enforce SD best practices (unit testing, integration, testing, pull requests). Ability to lead by example in architecture, design, and coding best practices.

Strategic thinker with a passion for innovation and a commitment to driving continuous improvement, but, because of the stage of our company, also tactical executor; must love to build.

Leadership qualities such as accountability, integrity, empathy, resilience, and a collaborative mindset.

Continuously demonstrate growth in domain expertise.
