About the role

Reporting to the Company’s GM Technology & Innovation (Battery Anode Material), an exciting opportunity exists for Principal Chemical Engineer to join the Syrah team based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This role is responsible for providing technical leadership, driving innovation and process optimization, and contributing to studies / projects supporting Syrah’s Active Anode Material (“AAM”) growth strategy.

Key role responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to AAM projects and operations, and mentor junior engineers;
  • Lead specific conceptual, scoping and feasibility studies as required;
  • Collaborate with AAM projects and operations teams to design and optimize anode material manufacturing processes, ensuring scalability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness;
  • Work with the Technology & Innovation product development team to translate research outcomes into design solutions;
  • Prepare, review, and approve engineering deliverables, such as process flow diagrams, P&IDs, mass and energy balances, mechanical equipment lists, and functional and equipment specifications, as required;
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization, yield improvement and cost reduction in collaboration with the AAM operations teams;
  • Provide input for the preparation of budgets, business case proposals, cost reports, plans, and scope of work documents;
  • Keep up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies;
  • Implement safety protocols and risk assessments;
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations on AAM projects.

Essential skills and experience include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field;
  • 10+ years’ of relevant industry experience, preferably with a minerals processing focus (e.g. hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy);
  • Strong knowledge of mass and energy balances, fluid dynamics, transport phenomena and process automation and control;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks and competing deadlines;
  • Pro-activeness and proven capacity to think conceptually and make assertive decisions with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work cohesively with team members;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with experience leading engineers and projects;
  • Sound computer proficiency with advanced MS Office skills, including Excel, SysCAD (or other process simulation software), and Database skill level.
