Title: Supervisor of English Language Training
Location:
Hybrid; 4822 N. Broadway, 5715 W Belmont
Shift:
Monday to Friday (8:30am to 5:00pm)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and plans Adult Education services, including but not limited to, English language Acquisition, Adult Basic Education, Citizenship, and Family Literacy for the immigrant and refugee community.
  • Ensures comprehensive service delivery through supervision of English Language Training staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Provides direct instruction to participants.
  • Plans and executes registration for adult education classes.
  • Coordinates volunteer literacy program.
  • Coordinates data entry and file management.
  • Maintains contract compliance and assists in grant reporting.
  • Handles facilities issues for schools on an as-needed basis.
  • Observes instructors and coach them on best practices in adult education.
  • Coordinates professional development for teaching staff.
  • Provide training to relevant staff in various facts of the position and ensures documents are completed in a thorough, accurate, and timely fashion.
  • Participates in interviewing, hiring, discipline, terminations, and other relevant employment transitions, within defined parameters (including interns).
  • Represents Heartland Human Care Services on coalitions, councils, and with external partners.
  • Identifies and responds to existing gaps in services through the development of appropriate programmatic responses.
  • Ensures the implementation of organization and program/department policies and procedures. (e.g., personnel, financial, participant eligibility, Standards of Professional Conduct, Ethics, HIPAA, etc.).
  • Ensures resources are available to support program staff, and volunteers in assisting participants including referrals, follow-ups, and advocacy needs.
  • Adheres to professional standards as outlined by governmental bodies, private funding sources, and professional associations.
  • Participates in Refugee and Immigrant Community Services (RICS) manager meetings, all-staff meetings, professional development, and other meetings. Helps coordinate with other RICS programs to support effective service provision and staff development.
  • Participates in the development of long-range plans, service delivery models, and other significant strategies and/or systems.
  • Assumes an appropriate role in other RICS tasks or projects.
  • Holds regular team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Teacher IIIs, Volunteer Facilitator, Resource ESL Instructors, English Language Training interns.

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute of higher learning is required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working within adult education or vocational training required.
  • Minimum one (1) year supervisory experience is required.
  • Experience with refugee and immigrant communities is strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual is strongly preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Background check required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):

  • Ability to speak and be fluent in a second language including but not limited to the following multi-language abilities:
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Access to regular, dependable, and timely transportation.
  • Ability and comfortability working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder, and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations professionally and diplomatically.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance Human Care Services.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

Work Arrangement:

This role is eligible for a “hybrid” or “remote” work arrangement. If hybrid, it is expected this person would be able to meet for “in person” meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required regularly (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Each program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year. To meet both the needs of our participants and contractual obligations, employees are required to be flexible regarding scheduling and work location.
  • Program sites are located throughout the Chicago area, including the North and South sides of Chicago, as well as the suburbs. Employees may be required to report to any one of our locations on a temporary or permanent basis.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk.
  • The employee must be able to stoop, kneel, and crawl.
  • The employee is regularly required to use hands to key, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.
  • The employee must have unrestricted ability to provide physical restraint.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
