Yorktel is currently seeking a Projection Engineer who will have oversight over all aspects of the client site for screenings, presentations and special events. This includes ensuring the smooth scheduling, booking and execution of all events for our clients in theatrical, streaming, and general entertainment needs. This person will play a critical role in shaping the way our content is presented to various stakeholders, including internal executive teams, industry professionals, and promotional audiences. The qualified candidate will have three key roles: Projection Engineer, Projectionist and Client Service Representative (CSR).

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Projection Engineer's responsibilities include performing content playback from all current types of media formats including the ingest or download of media content, and keys from the client and/or external vendors. They will be expected to set up Xenon Digital and Laser Projector playback to industry standard specifications, confirming picture and sound quality. Play the content (2D & 3D DCP, QuickTime, Avid, DVD/Blu-ray, Laptop HDMI or HDSDI, and Fiber Feeds) in the space with no issues. They will also handle, distribute, collect, and clean 3D glasses for 3D shows. Other key responsibilities include operating the house lighting, curtains, masking, and other house systems pertaining to the show’s needs. Lastly, they need to be able to work with clients, other employees, security, and third-party vendors to get the ideal envisioned show executed. All the while providing a safe and courteous environment for our clients and other employees.

As industry professionals, we expect our Projection Engineer will put on a good show in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The Client Service Representative (CSR) responsibilities include the scheduling and management of the client including, but not limited to all screening, presentations and special events. The person will also manage and supervise the daily hires (as required during peak work periods); prepare daily schedules, monitor crew assignments and workflows.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Leading a team with clear vision of studio leadership goals for screenings with a focus on managing the end-to-end screening process with strategic planning, critical thinking, and effective communication.

  • In-room operational problem-solving.
  • Support live events, premieres, and previews.
  • Support all production activities on the Screening / Review Rooms
  • Operation/Management/Technical support of all equipment in the Screening / Review Room
  • Works directly with clients in Screening / Review Rooms for Postproduction Engineering focus and support
  • Perform regular inspections and calibrations of all equipment.
  • Coordinate with clients for Design/Implementation of unique requirements for production
  • Ability to offer professional and technical insights among the team
  • Current and good standing within IATSE Local 306, New York
  • Prepare and process billing; track monthly revenue and provide monthly utilization and usage reports.
  • Prepare customized schedule reports to DSS (Digital Studio Services) team and finance upon request.
  • Check the theater for cleanliness and any items need attention.
  • Spot check content playback, picture, and sound
  • Stage 3D glasses if needed.
  • Connect with client for start time/cue.
  • Monitor playback picture and sound.
  • Run backup projector if available.
  • Follow up with client for run of show to address any issues or notes.
  • Preshow/screening SOPs. Screening and Wrap SOP knowledge to include but not limited to: collect 3D glasses if used, close curtain, kill projector lamps, mute processor, unload content and delete KDMs if still open, check theater for lost/left behind items, check screen for damage and/or artifacts, kill house lights

Secondary Position Responsibilities:

  • Manages maintenance contracts with all ancillary vendors.
  • Perform repairs, build, configure, and assess needs for all projection and control systems.
  • System design, integration, and support for current and legacy projection and control systems
  • Repair all projection equipment in the Screening / Review Rooms and their associated control systems.
  • Design, build, and installation of systems.
  • Capacity and desire to lead projects from design to final turnover.
  • Prepare and process payroll for daily hire projectionists.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the technical quality of screenings, including the engagement of engineering teams for reviews of projection and sound to ensure that studio films are presented at the highest standards possible.
  • Implement and maintain quality control processes to troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues that may arise during screening events.
  • Manage a clear screening link process including version control, platform assessments and process improvement reviews to ensure global management of all online viewings.
  • Able to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong industry network and relationships with stakeholders such as filmmakers, post-production executives, and vendor management teams.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills for effectively engaging with internal teams and external partners

Leadership & Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position may require supervising additional personnel as required to support the customer’s needs.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Dolby Certified technician for room tuning.
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills
  • Understand Computer networking.
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Color correction methods and rationales.
  • Operate and service legacy film and video formats and equipment.
  • Crestron controlled control systems.
  • General knowledge of computers and interface software for various equipment control
  • Strong knowledge of current and continued development of knowledge of future projection technology
  • Strong knowledge of DCP and KDM handling
  • Understanding of SDI signals, including but not limited to 12G, 6G, 3G, and HD
  • Comprehension of color spaces, and CIE color relationships
  • Check screen for damage and/or artifacts.
  • Read white light to proper Fl/nits.
  • Check 5.1/7.1/Atmos sound.
  • Verify DCP/content is loaded with associated KDMs if needed.
  • Build playlist with any requested Social Media Cards/Walk-in slides
  • Auto CAD
  • Strong customer orientation and ability to interface with VP level management in customer environments.
  • High attention to detail and ability to multitask.

Education & Experience:

  • BA/BS in Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of proven experience as a Projection Engineer or Projectionist
  • Experience in and a working knowledge of the following areas is required:
    • Managing teams
    • Professional services
    • Managed services
    • Technical support services
    • ServiceNow
    • Cloud based collaboration services (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)
    • Unified communication and collaboration solutions
    • System Integration
  • In depth understanding of operational service delivery key performance indicators with experience reporting on and delivery to SLA’s and SLO’s
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • Requires extensive sitting, standing, and walking
  • Limited weekend and/or night work may be required
  • Must be willing to complete background checks and drug tests as required by current or future contracts
