Organization:

Mount Auburn Cemetery comprises 175 acres and is situated in Watertown and Cambridge near Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1831, and visited by over 200,000 people each year, Mount Auburn is a National Historic Landmark, recognized as the first “rural cemetery” and the inspiration for the American Parks Movement during the 19th century. As an active cemetery, Mount Auburn inspires all who visit, comforts the bereaved, and commemorates the dead in a landscape of exceptional beauty. As an accredited arboretum, Mount Auburn features 5,000 trees and more than 20,000 plants overall.

POSITION SUMMARY:  

Assists the Irrigation System and Infrastructure Manager performing maintenance and repair of the irrigation system, drainage system, roads, and paths throughout the Cemetery. 
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Under the direct supervision of the irrigation system manager, assists in the installation, repair and maintenance of the Cemetery’s irrigation system.  Work includes trenching for new installations; cutting, fitting and connection of polyethylene, pvc, galvanized steel and copper piping; layout and installation of emitters, sprinkler heads and other irrigation equipment.
  • Assists in the repair of roads and paths, including cutting asphalt, filling potholes, minor road striping.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the drainage system including cleaning catch basins, area drains, and drain covers.
  • Ability to use all vehicles and equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Follows all Cemetery safety policies and procedures related to assigned tasks, including wearing personal protective equipment, proper handling of chemicals, ladder safety and lifting and moving heavy objects. Brings unsafe conditions to the attention of the Irrigation and Infrastructure Systems Manager.
  • Always represents Mount Auburn appropriately when at work, in demeanor, attitude, uniform and written and verbal communication.
  • Assists with any Cemetery business including special meetings, conferences, Friends of Mount Auburn events and public events as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Driver’s license required.
  • One year of irrigation or similar trades experience required, including experience operating hand-held power tools in a safe manner.
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate successfully with staff and visitors.
  • Ability to read maps of the Cemetery grounds, including irrigation and drainage maps.
  • Ability to use radio communication equipment.
  • Ability to be flexible as work demands change.
  • Follows all Cemetery safety policies and procedures related to assigned tasks, including wearing personal protective equipment (eye and hearing protection, gloves, etc.), proper handling of chemicals, ladder safety, and lifting and moving heavy objects. 

REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 
  • Ability to shovel earth or snow, and to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions.
