PRINCIPAL ENGINEER - TRANSMISSION PLANNING

Position Summary Description

The Principal Engineer is responsible for having a high degree of knowledge base and the ability to plan, design and execute projects with minimal supervision. The Principal Engineer manages all phases of planning projects for Seminole’s high-voltage transmission system, including assistance to both the Engineering & Design department Seminole generation owners. The Principal Engineer oversees the project's conception, design and specification, including but not limited to, economic analysis of new loads, best practices to integrate new resources or substations, and identification of areas on the Seminole system requiring upgrades/modifications for future load growth. In addition, the Principal Engineer, manages the evaluation of new generation and/or transmission facilities to the Seminole or Member transmission systems following FERC interconnection guidelines; leads the development and implementation of documentation for transmission planning compliance with the NERC Reliability Standards and FRCC modeling requirements; evaluates transmission and generation options to more effectively and efficiently serve Seminole Member load.

Essential Functions

• Performs power system steady-state load flow contingency analysis, short circuit analysis, dynamic stability analysis, and single point of failure analysis of the interconnected transmission system.
• Assists junior staff in the modelling of Seminole and Seminole Member facilities within the FRCC Databank.
• Participates and coordinates Feasibility, System Impact, and Facility studies, both internally and with Member staff.
• Assists junior staff in the preparation of annual FERC-715 and FRCC Form 13 filings.
• Performs the function of Subject Matter Expert (SME) as it relates to assigned NERC Reliability Standards associated with the Planning Coordinator (PC) and Transmission Planner (TP) function.
• Supports the development of Seminole’s short-term and long-term transmission expansion plans.
• Actively participates as the lead representing Seminole in the FRCC technical subcommittees
• Interfaces with finance and load forecasting personnel when performing economic evaluations of possible transmission projects and resource solutions.
• Actively participates as lead representing Seminole at the FRCC Order 1000 Regional Projects Subcommittee.
• Performs other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. Advanced degree in engineering preferred. Fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible power industry experience in the discipline of system protection, emphasis on design and settings. Professional registration as an engineer in Florida or an advanced degree in engineering may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to follow established protective measures including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory equipment may be required. Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Working Conditions

Normal office conditions. Some travel and work outside of normal business hours to technical seminars, conferences, professional meetings, and meetings with Member cooperative may be required. While working in certain areas of the plant, there may be extreme temperatures and conditions.
