JOB SUMMARY

This position, under limited supervision, performs general routine maintenance and repair to include heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, plumbing, carpentry and insulation, drywall, painting and electrical at all city facilities and assists with landscape maintenance in public green spaces and rights-of-way.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs facility maintenance activities and projects, including but not limited to repairing water heaters and mixing valves; lighting ballast, switches, and fixtures; leaky faucets and water lines; unclogging drains, toilets, and sinks.
  • Performs minor carpentry, drywall, and painting work along with general preventative maintenance.
  • Performs preventative maintenance to heating/air-condition equipment and components.
  • Performs sidewalk maintenance and repair.
  • Performs irrigations system maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Operates heavy equipment to include street sweeper, backhoe, mini-excavator, and tractor.
  • Assists with landscaping duties to include, mowing, trimming, edging, weedeating, fertilizing and spraying on City property and rights-of-way.
  • Assists with right-of-way, city facility, and streetscape landscape maintenance.
  • Trains and provides leadership to employees.
  • Works on special projects as assigned.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment.
  • Schedules equipment maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in carpentry, plumbing, and/or electrical trades and irrigation / landscaping maintenance and repairs.
  • Any combination of education and experience totaling two (2) years may be considered.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical practices landscape maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of concrete construction and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of irrigation system operations and repair.
  • Knowledge of safety practices involved in municipal facilities.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate power tools, hand tools, and associated diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to operate weedeater, edger, chainsaw, brush cutter and lawnmower.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed outdoors with constant exposure to dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, insects, and inclement weather.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 20 pounds of force to move objects and the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

MENTAL DEMANDS

Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, irregular schedule/overtime, and working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires tedious or exacting work and noisy/distracting environment.
