Description

The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) oversees health information management, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and mitigating potential risks that may affect the organization. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of healthcare information systems, data security, risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and effective staff management.

Requirements

Essential Functions

Health Information Management (HIM):

  • Develops and implements HIM policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations, including HIPAA and HITECH.
  • Manages creating, storing, retrieving, disseminating, and destroying patient medical records in electronic and paper formats.
  • Oversees coding and billing processes to ensure accuracy and compliance with coding guidelines.
  • Provides training and professional development opportunities for HIM staff to ensure competency and compliance with best practices.
  • Supervises staff to ensure that the HIM department operates effectively and efficiently. They are responsible for creating a positive work environment, setting performance expectations, and evaluating employee performance to ensure that staff are meeting expectations and contributing to the success of the organization.

Risk Management:
  • Identifies potential risks to the organization related to patient safety, data security, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develops and implements risk management strategies to mitigate identified risks, including the development of policies, protocols, and training programs.
  • Conducts risk assessments and audits to evaluate compliance with regulatory standards and identify areas for improvement.
  • Investigates incidents and adverse events, including breaches of patient confidentiality or data security breaches, and implements corrective actions as necessary.
  • Serves as a resource to staff regarding risk management principles and best practices.

Compliance and Regulatory Affairs:
  • Stays abreast of changes in healthcare regulations and accreditation standards relevant to health information management and risk management.
  • Ensures the organization's compliance with regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, HITECH Act, and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepares reports and documentation for regulatory agencies and accreditation bodies as required.
  • Coordinates with legal counsel to address compliance issues and respond to legal inquiries.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in health information management, healthcare administration, or a related field required.
  • Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) or Certified in Healthcare Information Management Systems (CHIMS) preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in health information management, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, HITECH Act, and other relevant laws and regulations.
  • Experience in risk management, including risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and incident investigation a plus.

Competencies
  • Knowledge of health information management principles and practices.
  • Strong leadership skills to manage and motivate the team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Technical knowledge of healthcare IT systems, including electronic health records and data management systems.
  • Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures related to health information management.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements related to health information management, including HIPAA and other privacy laws.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting to support organizational decision-making.
  • Strong project management skills to oversee the implementation of new health information management systems.
  • Ability to stay up to date with the latest trends and developments in health information management.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and protecting patient information.
