GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The SBA Underwriter is responsible for the effective and efficient management and coordination of underwriting and assisting in the servicing of the bank’s Small Business Administration (SBA) 7(a) and 504 loan portfolio. Primary responsibility is ensuring that the 7A and 504 loans are underwritten and serviced with minimal issues. This includes making sure that eligibility and underwriting procedures are followed pertaining to the guidelines set forth in the SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), 50-10 and SBA SOP 50-55. This position could lead to hiring, managing, and training of personnel that handle the above responsibilities, and any other analytical tasks assigned by the Director of SBA.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:


1. Work with SBA sales personnel and, when necessary, the bank’s lending personnel in gathering and analyzing all required information from existing borrowers and prospects.

2. Analyze credit worthiness of SBA loan prospects.

3. Prepare credit approval documentation including repayment analysis, guarantor financial strength and risk rating.

4. Ensure highest quality credit memos with limited amount of back-and-forth revisions.

5. Maintain extensive knowledge of the bank’s internal SBA loan policy, regulatory issues, and the SBA’s SOP.

6. Ensure all required appraisals and ESA reports are compliant with SBA rules.

7. Training and answering questions from, and resolving non-routine problems for, bank personnel involved in eligibility, processing and closing.

8. Perform all other duties as required or assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS:


1. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to read, write, and understand English; ability to speak clearly, confidently, and effectively when greeting customers, clients or vendors; must possess excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

2. CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written or verbal instructions; ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.

3. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Must be able to work under limited supervision; standard practice enables the employee to proceed alone on routine work, referring any questionable cases or issues to direct supervisor.

4. DECISION-MAKING: Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance which would affect the work operations of co-workers and the organization’s clientele.

5. MENTAL DEMAND: Very close mental demand; multiple tasks requiring very close and continuous attention and high degree of concentration and focus to limit errors. Must be able to work effectively while multi-tasking in a high-volume environment.

6. EMPLOYEE CONTACT: Regular contact with co-workers within the department, office, or enterprise, which will require ordination of efforts generally in the normal course of performing duties; requires tact in discussing problems, presenting data, and making recommendations.

7. ACCURACY: High level of accuracy required; processes and communications must maintain a degree of confidentiality; responsible for setting up, monitoring, reviewing, and maintaining personal trust accounts on trust accounting system; must pay special attention to tasks requiring repetitive input and/or review; as a proofreader, attention to detail is critical.

8. TRAINING: Must complete all required compliance exams on a yearly basis.

9. PROBLEM SOLVING: Identify, define, analyze, and learn about the problem; understand what others’ interests are and be ready to satisfy those interests. List options, pros and cons and evaluate each one.

10. USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND/OR COMPUTERS: Must be proficient with 10-key (by touch); alpha/numeric data entry; spreadsheets, word processing, basic typing, and excellent PC skills. Experience with scanning, copying, faxing, email, etc. is required.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS:


While performing the essential functions of this job, this position is regularly required to sit, stand, talk, or hear; use hands to handle or feel and frequently are required to reach with their hands and arms and occasionally stand, walk, climb or balance; may occasionally lift, move, push or pull up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. This is an indoor position and the noise level in the work area is usually moderate.


REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:


College Degree in Finance or Accounting preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years of banking experience with prior SBA or Commercial Lending underwriting experience preferred. Preferred experience in a strong working knowledge of current SBA Standard Operating Procedures primarily relating to the credit underwriting requirements of the various SBA programs.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports directly to the SVP / Director of SBA. The SVP / Director of SBA reports to the Chief Lending Officer, who in return reports to the President/CEO of American National Bank & Trust.
