General Description

The Refugee School Impact Grant (RSIG) at Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest is seeking enthusiastic candidates for a part-time literacy/English language development teachers to assist newly arrived middle and high-school refugee students to build foundational literacy/reading and writing skills. Full job description, requirements and preferred professional background, knowledge, experience, and education are listed below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assists recently-arrived refugee students with low literacy skills to build foundational literacy skills
  • Use available resources to instruct students using best practices in literacy instruction
  • Tracks and analyzes data to measure the success of the literacy curriculum and instruction
  • Establishes a rapport with students and staff with refugee backgrounds from diverse cultural origin to facilitate learning of English and literacy skills
  • Creates an environment conducive to effective learning for newly arrived refugee students from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrates ability to use student time effectively
  • Plans for and displays initiative and/or creativity in applying current research and best practices to the area of literacy
  • Being able to use assessment tools measures to monitors student growth in the areas literacy, including the areas of reading and writing
  • Disaggregate data on a regular basis and be able to set individual goals that meet students' specific needs

Education and Experience:

  • Teaching experience in a variety of secondary school and/or middle school settings (for example, teaching/co-teaching, individual tutoring, general education, special education), and/or Adult Education
  • Bachelor's degree in English, education, or a related area
  • Knowledge of Common Core literacy standards
  • Experience in the use and analysis of variety of assessment tools.
  • Highly qualified in literacy, English, or reading instruction (preferred)

Language Skills:

Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to listen and perceive need. Ability to work with people form diverse backgrounds non-judgmentally. Ability to effectively present and represent LSS-SW and the program's needs to religious and community groups as well as others in the social services community. Fluent in English, both spoken and written; bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is preferred.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to understand basic math and calculations.

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to define problems, collect data, evaluate information, draw conclusions, and take appropriate action based on this information. Ability and confidence to make decisions when appropriate and when to solicit guidance.

• The noise level in the work environment varies with the activity level of the facility.
• Maintain valid AZ Driver License and reliable transportation.
• Ability to work within mission of LSS-SW.
