Job Description

Job Summary:

We are currently seeking an exceptional Sous Chef to join our team. Working under the supervision of our Executive Chef, our Sous Chef will be responsible for planning and preparing food and supervising other kitchen staff. Our Sous Chef will also help our Executive Chef plan the menu, take stock of inventory, replenish supplies, and ensure that our kitchen staff members operate in a clean and safe environment. This is an exciting opportunity for someone comfortable leading and ensuring a strong culinary experience with staff members and guests, who have a great palate, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work with ease in high-pressure situations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

  • Have a working knowledge of kitchen management, inventory management, staff scheduling, and food/labor cost maintenance.
  • Be able to manage the line and ensure food quality, presentation, and consistency standards are maintained during service.
  • Have experience and be efficient at expediting busy shifts.
  • Good knowledge of food costs and budgeting.
  • Be a communicative, proactive team player always.
  • Have experience creating and maintaining prep lists, placing orders, and working with vendors.
  • Have the knowledge and experience to maintain food safety standards to always keep the kitchen in A-grade condition.
  • Assist with BOH facilities maintenance and upkeep.
  • Assist in hiring and training kitchen staff and orienting new hires.
  • Oversees and supports line cooks in synchronizing food procurement as well as other food preparation tasks.
  • Ensures quantity of daily prepped foods to ensure the restaurant runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
  • Orders and receives food products from vendors, checks in by item on invoice, and inputs in receiving log.
  • Properly returns and stores all food items in designated storage areas at the end of the shift.
  • Performs all miscellaneous duties assigned by upper management.
  • Adhere to all company safety and sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and laws including health and safety standards.

Required Skills / Abilities / Competencies:

  • Demonstrated strong leadership and teamwork skills and abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal in English & some Korean (preferable)
  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, payroll, etc.)
  • Reliable and predictable attendance
  • Promote the culture, values, and mission of Restaurant K.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-4 years in a fast-paced kitchen, casual or fine dining high-volume restaurant is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to acquire a valid Texas Food Handler Card within 30 days of hiring.
  • College degree/Culinary school degree preferred, but not necessary.
  • To inspire people to embrace different cultures of the world.

Work Environment:

  • This job entails frequent exposure to high temperatures and extreme cold. There is frequent contact/immersion of hands in water and sanitation solutions; and contact with produce items, dairy products, and frequent allergen-related items such as nuts, citrus, peanut butter, cinnamon, etc.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
  • May be requested to work weekends for special events.
  • Must be able to work safely in a noisy area.

Physical Requirements:

  • Be able to reach, bend, and frequently lift 30 pounds.
  • Must have the stamina to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Must be able to stand for periods of up to eight (8) hours.
  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds at a time. Required to use assistance when available i.e. hand trucks, ramps, or another team member.
