Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Detroit Action seeks a talented digital leader to enhance our campaigns as we embark on our most ambitious electoral and issue organizing field program to date.  This position will be responsible for managing and representing the Detroit Action Digital Communication and Organizing program at the local, state and federal level. The Digital Manager will assist in creating boundary-pushing long-term and rapid response digital communications strategies and identify and implement new ways to integrate digital organizing into all voter engagement tactics. We’re looking for someone with hands-on experience with digital strategy and organizing, SMS and peer texting tools, content design and development, social media account management, email marketing, and website management. Our ideal candidate will have competencies in digital organizing, planning and management in support of field, electoral, and issue campaigns. This position will also be responsible for the supervision and training of 1-2 digital organizers plus the yearly supervision of our digital fellows.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Hiring, managing and training team of digital organizers and fellows

  • Devise and execute digital messaging strategy to authentically convey Detroit Action’s voice and message in coordination with communications and other departments

  • Creating aggressive, long- and short-term digital communications strategies across a variety of platforms;

  • Execute digital advertising campaigns on several platforms, including Facebook and Google Search.

  • Analyzing and communicating digital metrics from digital platforms including social media channels, website traffic, and CRM data from action forms and emails;

  • Coordinate with the Field and Organizing Directors to support integrating digital organizing tools and tactics into issue and field organizing work. Identifying and implementing new ways to integrate digital organizing into all voter engagement tactics;

  • Maintaining and updating social media channels with original content, including graphics, videos, and other creative content;

  • Provide support, training, and resources for all organizing team members 

  • Managing vendors for digital tools as necessary.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Support the implementation of yearly political strategy by working across various departments and senior leadership team in the planning and evaluation of voter engagement, issue campaigns and other programs;

  • Identifying new digital communications avenues and creating compelling digital content that can be localized;

  • Overseeing email and digital fundraising program;

  • Increasing the social media reach of Detroit Action and allied organizations to push our message directly to the people we are trying to reach through content strategy and community engagement;

  • Work with senior staff to identify, define, and track priority metrics;

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • 3-7 years experience in digital strategy, content development, and social media account management;

  • Experience with digital organizing and planning in support of field, electoral, and issue campaigns (voter contact, GOTV);

  • Experience using digital organizing tools, email marketing and WordPress;

  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills with a strong sense of urgency and the ability to work effectively under pressure

  • Experience using graphic design tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Illustrator), Canva. Photography and video editing experience a plus;

  • Creativity in message delivery and plan design;

  • Experience with utilizing message testing, political polling, offline and online analytics to target and build strategy is a plus;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with unpredictable hours, and juggle multiple projects at once;

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a busy office with personal enthusiasm, optimism, and a sense of humor;

  • Able to communicate effectively to a diverse set of constituencies in a diverse set of geographies

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience managing social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, including content creation;

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: 

The Digital Manager reports to the Organizing Director and works collaboratively with staff, contractors, vendors and other partners on a weekly basis to maintain program efficiency. Detroit Action and Michigan Action are projects of Tides Center and Tides Advocacy.

SALARY:

The salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $60,000-$70,000. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • The position is a full-time position that works 35 hours per week
  • This position is based in an office building in Detroit, MI - The position will be required to work some weekends (Saturday and Sunday)
  • The position may require national travel up to 100% of the time
  • The assigned workspace is a cubicle in an open and shared work area with a moderate level of noise and interruptions.
