Essential Functions
A medical assistant is a multi-skilled professional responsible for general clinical and procedural patient care, a liaison between patients and providers.
General Dermatology
Greet patients and escort them to exam room; obtain and document accurate patient history including skin history and past medical history, current medications/allergies; identify and document chief complaints of patients’ visits;
Prepare patients for examinations and procedures, while being cognizant of patient’s past medical history conditions, allergies and medications contraindications to procedures/medications being performed/prescribed;
Assists providers with routine dermatologic procedures, including but not limited to biopsies, I&D’s, IL Kenalog injections, LN2, ED& C;
Cosmetic Dermatology
Prepare and assist providers with neurotoxin and dermal filler injections;
Prepare and assist providers with laser and other cosmetic procedures;
Keep up to date with new cosmetic services offered by the practice;
Assist providers with cosmetic consultations, demonstrating knowledge about indications, risks/benefits, and cost;
Able to consult/advise patients about cosmetic product lines carried by the practice;
Surgical Procedures
Proficient in sterile technique;
Assist providers with surgical excisions and MOHS surgeries;
Perform wound care, bandage changes, suture removal.
Patient Education
Wound/ Post Procedural Care: Biopsies, Surgical and Cosmetic procedure instructions
Basic skincare recommendations
Knowledge of prescription instructions and potential side effects.
OSHA Compliance and Other Responsibilities
Contribute and maintain a healthy/safe work environment;
Sterilize instruments and efficiently utilize autoclave;
Turn over patients’ rooms by removing sharps, bio-waste, cleaning and setting up for the next patient;
Responsible for routinely checking expiration dates of supplies and medications;
Properly discard bio-hazardous waste and sharps containers;
Restock medical supplies; maintain organized and clean exam/procedure rooms at all times.
Scribe
- Understands principles of medical documentation including diagnoses, treatment plans, and medications;
- Understands fundamentals of coding and billing;
- Efficiently utilize EMR software to accurately capture patients’ encounters;
- Maintain patients’ biopsy logs;
- Responsible for timely management of charting.
Administrative/Customer Service * Obtain prior authorizations for prescriptions;
- Schedule appointments;
- Attend to refill prescription requests;
- Make outbound phone calls and answer patient questions;
- Discuss patients’ results for blood work, biopsies, and cultures with appropriate documentation;
- Comply with all HIPAA regulations.
Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Current Medical Assistant Certification if available (CMA /RMA);
- 2+ years of experience as a medical assistant with high professionalism, strong organizational, communication, analytical, and PC skills;
- Previous dermatology experience strongly preferred;
- Must have knowledge of medical terminology;
- Excellent grammar, spelling, punctuation and typing skills;
- Honesty, professional and personal integrity;
- Exceptional customer service skills;
- Friendly and compassionate disposition with strong interpersonal communication skills;
- Must possess critical thinking skills, and a positive attitude while working in a fast-paced team environment;
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to new policies and procedures;
- High stress tolerance;
- Excellent time management skills;
- Must be dependable and punctual;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, must be self-motivated but ask for assistance when needed/take instruction from providers or supervising employees;
- Dedication to maintaining the confidentiality of all patient records.
Compensation will be based on experience.
