The Recreation Coordinator provides therapeutic recreation indoor and outdoor challenge programs in a safe, healthy, and caring environment that seeks to preserve children, their families, and communities by fostering self-esteem, respect for the community, a sense of purpose, and life skills needed to achieve their highest potential.

Board of Child Care (BCC) is not a federal or state agency. It is an independent not-for-profit organization that serves over 1,000 children annually across 12 locations. You would join about 800 teammates across DC, MD, PA, and WV that empower youth and their families to flourish within their community.

What is the Caminos Program?

You would be helping children who have recently migrated to the United States and are seeking opportunities for reunification with family as well as the chance to pursue their education and legal immigration cases. BCC calls this our Caminos program, and we see it as a fulfillment of our purpose as a non-profit: to enrich communities, one family at a time.

What does this job do specifically?

  • Model and act in accordance with BCC’s core values.
  • Honor differences, acknowledge uniqueness, and amplify all voices. Partner with BCC’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee to build (and participate) in trainings and group experiences that strengthen BCC’s commitment to EDI. Model the use of inclusive language.
  • Works in collaboration with the Director of Program Supports and the Caminos Operations Coordinator in the planning and implementation of an engaging, well-rounded recreation program that includes diverse, skills based, acculturation focused activities both on campus and within the local community.
  • To facilitate recreation activities that are responsive to the individual developmental, communication and cultural needs of the youth in the program, focusing on the promotion of skill development for youth at a variety of functional levels.
  • Monitoring recreation supplies and maintaining an adequate inventory of common use items to ensure that the needs of the program are being consistently met.
  • Able to develop, organize, and facilitate therapeutic recreational programming to engage youth in positive decision making.
  • Ability to supervise and organize staff to assist with facilitation of recreational activities.
  • To assist with the planning and implementation of summer trips and programs.
  • Obtain and maintain required certifications to deliver recreational programming, including but not limited to: Lifeguard, Ropes Course.
  • Ensure daily and recreational schedules are developed in accordance with ORR regulations for recreation and structured leisure time programming.
  • Contributes to the prevention and management of challenging behaviors by implementing the Board of Child Care’s Positive Behavior Support and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Techniques.
  • Promotes effective communication through the timely submission of documentation and compliance with ORR reporting regulations.
  • Ability to recognize, determine and write reportable incidents according to ORR policy.
  • Fosters quality and diversity in problem identification and conflict resolution among residents and co-workers
  • Provide transportation to and from community recreational programming events.

Where is this job based? Is this an in-person position?

This is a full-time, in-person position. Based out of our Baltimore, Maryland Campus, which is just off the Liberty Road Exit 16 of I-695.

Days and hours of work are flexible to include evening and weekend hours at both onsite and off-site locations. The position is essential during inclement weather.


What experience and education do I need?

A Bachelor’s Degree in behavioral sciences, human or social services, recreation, recreation therapy or physical education.

Minimum of one year child welfare and / or group child care experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Able to speak, read and write both English and Spanish.

One year of experience developing / delivering therapeutic recreation programming to a child or youth population.

Experience working with immigrant or refugee populations preferred.
