What To Expect


As part of the Insurance Services team, the primary responsibility of the Senior Underwriter is to analyze and evaluate risk exposures. This role manages new business and renewals workflow from initial submission to quote and bind. This role works with independent insurance agency partners to collect information pertaining to the risk quality and exposures while also relaying that information to carrier partners, and my have supervisor responsibilities. This is a full-time, salaried exempt position with standard business hours of Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm, with some flexibility at manager’s discretion.


What You’ll Do

  • Exhibit understanding and knowledge of carriers and risk tolerance.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment in the assessment of submission applications, loss runs, experience mod worksheets, and other supplemental information that pertains to a specific risk exposure(s).
  • Ensure that new submissions are processed, corresponding professionally with agents and carriers, providing quotes and/or declinations, follow-up on quoted business, and binding new and renewal business in accordance with our carrier requirements.
  • Responsible for meeting monthly premium goals in a specified territory.
  • Manage monthly quote goals.
  • Create and maintain a positive team environment that is highly efficient and productive, rewards performance excellence, and provides continued support for the culture and values.
  • Ensure adherence to the desired risk selection.
  • Negotiate pricing on new and renewal businesses.
  • Manage the process of endorsement requests, reviewing quotes, and partaking in making or attending agency meetings.
  • Document all activities, including contacts, calls (phone or in-person), appointments, and opportunities within the Agency Relationship Management (ARM) system.
  • Understand the company and carrier goals and their role in achieving business objectives.
  • Work with leadership to encourage and enforce a cohesive and collaborative environment between business development and underwriting, as well as other regional teams.
  • Contribute to overall company strategy and execution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, G Suite, or similar software
  • Comprehension of a task-based workflow system to manage prospective and current customers and accounts
  • This may include some travel (up to 25%) to visit agencies, attend conventions and trade shows, or other insurance professional networking or association events.

Preferred Experience

  • At least 3-5 years of business experience
  • At least 1-3 years of insurance experience in underwriting
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field mandatory

Unless fully remote, this position operates in a professional office setting and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This is largely a sedentary role with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. However, some filing is necessary and may require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
