Job Summary

The Data Delivery Team at One America is seeking an experienced Application DBA who is looking to join a fast paced and growing team focused on managing and strengthening the database environment. The ideal candidate should have a desire to leverage and build on their application DBA knowledge to improve and enhance One America's shared database environment.

The Application DBA will play a central critical role for identifying performing core database administration for the SQL Server and Snowflake environments, build automation to optimize the environment, build performance improvement plans, and be the central point of contact for application DBA work within the organization.

The role involves logical database design, reporting and the ongoing support and administration of databases, data marts, and warehouses. The role is responsible for writing and debugging complex SQL and understands the best ways to incorporate database requests into application programs. The role is deeply involved in requirements definition, design, development, deployment, maintenance, and enhancement of a variety of database structures.

The position will play a primary role in multiple projects, simple to challenging, with small to very large and complex SQL Server implementations. The application DBA will play an integral role in the development of analytics to measure performance and other areas of the data platform. This position requires a positive attitude and the ability to remain flexible in a dynamic and fluid environment.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Actively work with database software support for raising support tickets and triaging outages.
  • Implement/support automation for production deployment on database platform.
  • Develop, build & maintain mission critical centralized database platform.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot database errors.
  • Implement user /query log analysis and alerts.
  • Will collaborate with heterogeneous user groups from data engineers to data scientists.
  • Implement data encryption/decryption/masking policies to protect PII/PCI data.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of index design, query plan optimization and analysis required.
  • User security auditing.
  • Create utilization and capacity plans.
  • Tune the database to improve queries.
  • Provide technical leadership, fosters a team environment, and provides mentorship and feedback to technical resources.
  • Train users and answer questions.
  • On-call responsibilities on rotational basis for database administration.
  • Should be able to review project requests describing database user needs to estimate time and cost required to accomplish project.
  • User management, Security management, performance management, High availability management, space management, and backup management of databases.
  • Experience with database tools, such as: SSMS, Toad, and ER/Studio Data Modeler.
  • Build and maintain secure, compliant data processing pipelines, tables, views, procedures, and datasets.
  • Integrate, transform, and consolidate data from various structured and unstructured data systems into structures that are suitable for building analytics solutions and/or performing analysis.
  • Use database management tools and other Azure services for availability and performance monitoring.
  • Automate database administration tasks using SQL and shell scripts.
  • Work with engineers in support of SSO authentication requirements.
  • Managing sets of XML, JSON, and CSV from disparate sources.
  • Interprets, identifies, and solves unique and meaningful problems.
  • Leads technical contribution to requirements / story development conversations.
  • Communicates complex findings in a structured and clear manner to a non-technical audience (written and verbal) including communication to leadership.
  • Follows best practices and standards, identifies gaps, and suggests changes.
  • Responsible for understanding environmental constraints and planning to mitigate.
  • Works respectfully with all team members, both OneAmerica colleagues and vendor partner team members.

Job Requirements

Required Education and/or Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or a related discipline.

Recommended Education and/or Certifications

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals a plus.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate a plus.
  • Snowpro Core Certification a plus.

Required Work Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in system or application database administration, to include providing critical support for database operations.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting databases running on Azure or AWS cloud.
  • 3+ years of experience working on a relational database as an application DBA.
  • Ability to migrate from on-premises databases to cloud-based databases.
  • Knowledge of Snowflake a plus.
  • Understanding of data ingestion, data transformation, and making data consumable.
  • Superb communication and coaching skills with the ability to connect with members of the development teams.
  • Ability to apply and influence best practices and sound database design principles on a relational database platform.

Salary Band: 05C

This selected candidate will be expected to work hybrid in Indianapolis, IN. The candidate will also be expected to physically return to the office in CA, IN or ME as business needs dictate or for team-building and collaboration.
