Position Summary

Performs a variety of kitchen duties such as planning and ordering food for nutritional menus, food preparation, cooking, and serving meals for residents in shelter. Engages with shelter residents, volunteers, and community partners, and provides basic-skills training to employees (as needed).

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of proven cooking experience, including experience as a line chef, restaurant cook, or prep cook is required
  • Some culinary education is preferred
  • ServSafe or equivalent food handler certification is required
  • Understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures
  • Knowledge of industry’s best practices, proper sanitation procedures, and food safety guidelines
  • Demonstrates ability to read and write English and ability to perform basic math computations
  • Maintain valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to meet agency requirements for driving insurability.
  • Must be able to meet agency requirements for criminal background check (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Federal Bureau of Investigations).

Role and Responsibilities

Effectively and accurately coordinates performs food service and cooking assignments with kitchen staff:

  • Create monthly menu and prepare daily meals for up to 120 adults and children in shelter.
  • Ensure that all food safety regulations and standards are being followed, and ensure all staff follow food safety guidelines through training, as necessary
  • Coordinate with the Summit & Medina Regional Food Banks and other community partners to purchase supplemental food and supplies for the shelter..
  • Pick up scheduled donations throughout the week to ensure the shelter has adequate food for three meals per day.
  • Keep up-to-date inventory of food and expendable supplies (plates, cleaning supplies, silverware, cups, etc.) and place orders accordingly.
  • Coordinate with volunteers to assist with meal preparation, inventory, and organization of the kitchen’s stock room.
  • Perform kitchen opening and closing duties
  • Follow daily prep sheets and recipes to prepare and serve meals
  • Date and properly store food items and supplies
  • Restock food items in appropriate storage cabinets
  • Monitor and record all temperature logs daily

Maintain a clean and organized kitchen:

  • Wash soiled dishes, pots, pans, linens, and equipment
  • Keep all prep stations clean and organized
  • Keep walk-in cooler and freezer clean and organized
  • Ensure that plates, bowls, cups, and silverware are stocked daily
  • Maintain cleanliness in the dining and serving areas
  • Complete daily and weekly cleaning checklists and other responsibilities as directed
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and sanitary work environment.

Complies with agency policies and procedures, federal and state requirements, and educational/certification/registry requirements.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Work environment: This position will be in a facility with victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. In addition to interaction with the survivors, the employee may have interactions with families of these individuals, the assailants and law enforcement.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week, must be flexible and have weekend availability

Additional Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly with diverse populations. Ability to model open communication, fair and equitable treatment, management of conflicts and work in team structure.
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word and Excel.
