Constellation is a nonprofit research center whose mission is to help the world navigate the development of superhuman AI. We host and support researchers from nonprofit organizations, universities, companies, think tanks, and government. Our programs foster knowledge sharing and collaboration across the AI safety field.

We’re seeking a Sous to join our kitchen program at lunch. Reporting to the Executive Chef and the Lunch Chef, this individual will be primarily responsible for preparing, cooking and cleaning lunches. Ideal candidates are excited to explore foods and cuisines, to make culinary decisions both individually and with supervision and also to engage in quotidian but important tasks like vegetable prep and cookery.

Responsibilities
- Be the second chef for lunch meals, both making decisions and following directions on collaboratively developed and continuously changing menus
- Cook or otherwise prepare delicious foods, both from recipes and from culinary knowledge
- Deliver, arrange and label meals
- Clean equipment and facilities while one works/ as needed
- Collaborate to build and refine menus that fit the various dietary needs and preferences of constellation staff and guests.
- Prepare and deliver afternoon snack

Skills needed
- Solid to excellent cookery, including functional knife skills, sauteing, frying, wok based cooking, roasting, blanching
- Able to work without recipes and to precisely follow recipes as needed
- One or more areas of cooking knowledge (experience with an ethnic or regional cuisines, baking experience, cow and/or fish butchery, pickling/charcuterie/ferment work or others that applicant can talk about)
- Solid communication skills (English, written and verbal)
- Can act with sense of urgency as needed
- Strong sense of responsibility, will perform to high standards both with and without supervision
- Takes food safety and deliciousness seriously. Knows and follows food safety requirements
- Maintains sufficient personal hygiene
- Communicates effectively with lunch lead, coworkers and chef

Education and Experience
- At least one year related professional experience required, 2-5+ years preferred (we care about the passion and skills you bring to the task rather than credentialism, but wish to see that you have experience in the kitchen and knowledge that you want to work there)
- Food handlers card required (may be acquired after hiring decision), Servsafe or equivalent preferred

Physical Requirements
- Job requires standing and walking for a full day, safely lifting at least 50+ pounds at a time, dealing with objects that are some permutation of hot, sharp and heavy

Compensation
This is a full time, on-site role. Hours are Mondays through Fridays, 7:30am-3:30pm. We would like the candidate to start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, though there is some flexibility.

Compensation will depend on experience, but starts at $65,000-$70,000 per year. We offer catered lunches and dinners, 401(k) and cover PPO health, dental, and vision insurance.

Our office is in downtown Berkeley, CA, thirteen seconds from the nearest BART (metro) stop.
