Job Title: Chief Executive Officer & Financial Director


Salary: $150,000 - $170,000


Location: Leawood, Kansas

 

General Description: The CEO is the senior-level executive who provides thoughtful and visionary leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering, supporting and guiding the organization’s mission. The CEO will inspire innovation and ensure the organization is continually well-equipped to advance its mission. The CEO will also manage the organization’s resources to ensure financial sustainability in alignment with the organization’s mission and goals.


Core Duties and Responsibilities:


Leadership and Strategic Direction:

  • Works directly with the Board of Directors to set strategic long-term goals for the organization.
  • Organize, motivate, and mentor internal team leaders to strategically grow the impact of the research being conducted and the solutions being developed for pressing health and safety issues.
  • Work with senior leadership to develop organizational strategies and translate them into actional plans and measurable outcomes.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, collaboration, and accountability.

 

Financial Management:

  • Oversee all financial activities, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and compliance.
  • Monitor financial performance and make strategic recommendations to ensure financial stability and sustainability.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget in accordance with organizational goals and financial best practices.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate filing of form 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, New York State CHAR500’ Annual Filing for Charitable Organizations; form 1120, U.S. Corporate Income Tax Return; CT-3, New York State General Business Corporation Franchise Tax Return; form 5500, Annual Return/Report of Employee Benefit Plan; and other state tax returns as required.
  • Coordinate the annual financial statement and compliance audits, handling and implementing accounting and internal control system recommendations. Represent the Organization during audits conducted by funding sources.


Fundraising and Revenue Generation:

  • Lead fundraising efforts to secure diverse funding streams, including grants, contracts, and donations.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships with officials at NIH, FEMA, DOD, SAMHSA, and other federal and state agencies and with officials at private grant-making foundations.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors, foundations, and other funding sources to support the organization’s programs and initiatives.
  • Develop and execute innovative strategies to maximize revenue and resource utilization.


Operations and Administration:

  • Oversee operations and administrative functions to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure establishment and maintenance of operational policies, procedures, and systems to support organizational growth.
  • Implement best practices in governance, risk management, and compliance to uphold organizational integrity and accountability.


External Relations and Advocacy

  • Serve as the organization's primary spokesperson and advocate, representing its interests to funders and external collaborators, including government agencies, the media, and the public.
  • Build strategic partnerships and alliances with other organizations, community leaders, and advocacy groups to amplify the organization’s impact and influence.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, policy developments, and socio-economic issues affecting the organization’s mission and constituencies.


Required Education and Experience: 

  • Master’s degree in business administration, finance, non-profit management, or related field.
  • Proven leadership experience in a senior management role, preferably within the non-profit sector.
  • Ability to engage effectively with staff at all levels, the Board of Directors, and outside constituencies.
  • Strong financial acumen and expertise in financial management, budgeting, and accounting principles.
  • Ability to identify risk and find ways to mitigate it.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor relations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate a compelling vision and engage diverse funders and collaborators.
  • Strategic thinker who can translate into actional plans and measurable outcomes.
  • An entrepreneurial approach for building company growth.
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and values, with a passion for driving social impact and positive change.
