Description

Job Title: Data Scientist

Pay Range: $ 85,000.00 - $ 130,000.00

Organization: Kai Ming, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides free full-day full-year; full-day part-year; or part-day part-year Head Start preschool services to eligible children ages 3-5 years old in San Francisco, CA with funding from Head Start, the California Department of Education, First 5 San Francisco and San Francisco Office of Early Care & Education.

Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, the Data Scientist works in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, departments, and channels to support Kai Ming and ECE STEP organization's growth using data-driven insights.

Job Type: Full-time, 1-year assignment with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability

Reports to: Executive Director

Essential Duties:

  • Work with engineers on existing and developing databases with a few hundred users. Develop algorithms for the website to accomplish more effective task assignments, and provide meaningful data visualization to better assist decision-making
  • Work with team members to provide weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to assist with decision-making
  • Mine and analyze data from company databases to drive optimization and improvement of system development, marketing techniques, and program improvement strategies
  • Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data-gathering techniques
  • Use predictive modeling to increase and optimize services to children, families, and staff
  • Develop company A/B testing framework and test model quality
  • Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes
  • Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy
  • Work closely with the internal data analyst to create meaningful data visualization and mine more significant findings from our data
  • Lead analysis of Jupiter, ECE STEP, and SubStart data
  • Create better algorithms for mobile and web applications to assign substitute teachers
  • Analyze ECE STEP staff center assignments based on commute time and other relevant needs (location of child care, etc)
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be distinguished in writing and verbal communication. Be able to tell the story of the data in plain English to initiate people to reflect, think, and act on it.
  • 5-7 years of experience manipulating data sets and building statistical models, has a Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Mathematics, Computer
  • Science, or another quantitative field.
  • Experience using statistical computer languages (R, Python, SQL, etc.) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets
  • Experience in natural language analysis to find trends or highlights from anecdotal notes
  • Experience working with and creating data architectures
  • A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience visualizing/presenting data with IBM Cognos is a plus.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests, and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications., GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, Trees, text mining, social network analysis, etc.
